New Build Woes

Five Year Plan

Junior Member
So I got all the stuff for my new rig yesterday, happily put it all together, crossed my fingers and powered it on... no post. After an evening of troubleshooting, much colorful language and sore fingers, it still wouldn't frikin post.

Specs:
i5 2500k cpu
Asus Radeon HD 6870 vid card
Corsair 600T case
Asus p8p67 LE mobo
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 ram
Antec BP550 Plus PSU

Here's what I've done so far:
-cleared CMOS - no dice
-tested both ram sticks in memtest. Both show no errors. Tried em one at a time in every slot. No dice.
-swapped out PSU with the one from my old rig, no dice. The new one works fine in my old rig though.
-swapped out vid card from my old rig. (asus radeon 5450) - no dice
-reseated the cpu three times, twice with my aftermarket cooler, once with the stock cooler. no dice.
-I should add that the system turns on for about 2-3 seconds then shuts itself off.

I'm thinking my mobo's a dud. I just wanted to check with the folk from this lovely forum in case I'm being an idiot and overlooking something simple before I RMA the board.

Sometimes things come bad from the factory, even with good QA. Given what you've done to troubleshoot, sounds like the mb is the culprit.

But, how long did you Memtest each stick. I've seen reports of errors not being reported until very long into the test, like 20 hours or so.

Other than that, since you've replaced every other part with known working parts and the problem still exists, I think you've pretty much isolated the problem child.

Good luck!

have you made sure your front panel connectors are properly installed from motherboard to case?

Plugged in the ATX 12v_2x4 connector and Atx connector from psu ? They booth nice and snug to the motherboard?

I remember one time not checking those items and would pull my hair out thinking the motherboard was faulty.

Could be something shorting out behind the motherboard. Have you tried hooking everything up outside the case?

Were the motherboard standoffs installed from the factory? when I helped switch cases on my sons system, I noticed a standoff where there was no mounting hole on the motherboard in his old case, luckily no damage was done as there wasn't anything conductive where that standoff was. It was from when he swapped boards a few months earlier and the old board used that standoff while the new board didn't.

on these asus SB mobo, i dont even waste a minute screwing around anymore - just RMA immediately

erm, why would you leave off one of most important items - hdd

if you are feeling energetic you could try mobo out of case

you also left off kb/mouse
in bios turn on legacy usb
buy cheapest usb 2 kb/mouse you can find and try them
NO WIRELESS ANYTHING
Is cpu labeled fan connector occupied?

just curious
what is your aftermarket heat sink
lemme guess - cm 212 hyper plus

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Yeah, I had the system down to the bare basics (CPU, mobo, ram, vid card) and still nothing even outside of the case. All the power connectors were in the right place and snug. Disappointing - I've had such good luck with hardware up until now. Ah well, watcha gonna do?

Do you have a known good PSU to test with?

No post seems to almost always be PSU. If it was a CPU error you should get some mad beeping...

unfortunately the quality control is getting worse these days...I went through the exact same thing with my buddy a couple weekends back on his i3 2100 build. His board would post, and you could change things in the bios but as soon as you put any kind of load on it (try to install windows or linux or whatever) it would just lock and freeze. Now he is running great on a new motherboard. I agree rma it and be done.

Did you try only one stick of ram? Did you make sure it was in the right slot for that configuration? Did you make sure any additional power cable needed for the GPU was attached? Did you check the case connectors for the proper orientation to pin one or, did you rely on the cable labels?
