New Build thanks to BP

Got my BP claim check today, so it's time to for my new build. Currently using rig that I built in 06.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Gaming and general use, no editing or graphics things

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$1500 US
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

US

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Nope, whatever is currently considered to have the edge price/performance wise

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

Keyboard/mouse

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Found this a while back, looks pretty solid. mfenn seems to make solid reasonable suggestions, his build looked good here, but it's 6 weeks old......any updates?

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

I'm open to this, don't know much about overclocking. If it's not too difficult I will.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

I've never been a huge monitor guy, looking for best bang for buck in this dept.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Check is in hand.....so whenever I pick what I want it's getting ordered.

My current rig has lasted 4 years, E6400, Soprano case, 2 gig ram. Current GFX is 9800 GTX. I would like similar lifespan out of new build, the current chips out make this seem easy to attain.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thanks for reply. Quick question, not that a hundred bucks for a blu ray is bad, however, I don't own any blu rays and don't plan on it in the future. Could it be used for backup? Or should the 80 something bucks saved by using DVD go somewhere else in the build?

Why thank you! 🙂

The combo deals that I listed in that build are probably not available any more, but the build that David posted above is very similar in spirit and gets my .

I would probably swap the Blu-ray burner out for a plain-old $19 DVD burner though. The build that david posted is pretty much in the price for performance sweet spot. I don't think that upgrading to an i7 870 or a GTX 480 is worth it. One potential thing to spend some extra money on would be a 120GB Vertex 2.

I wouldn't get a Blu Ray for backup, I'd get a HDD. Since it was in the budget I figured you might want it. Not needed either way. I agree with mfenn, and will add a few details.

With SLI on certain games you will notice frame stuttering that would drive me crazy. There are also still driver issues. I think anyone is best off with a single card.

This is what I have so far based on Davids and mfenns suggestions.

Is the case and power supply combo a good price, is that a good power supply?

I assume all this will fit fine into the case?

I'm not one to wait for the latest and greatest tech, but with the new 6800 series coming out in a couple of days, should I wait to see what those can do and or wait for a price drop?

I will of course dig deeper for rebates and cheaper prices, but this is more just a list of parts.

Thanks all

Comes out in two days, i would wait... 🙂

check out last months maximum pc. they built a pretty nice budget gaming rig for around 1600 bucks i believe. there were some things that could bring the price down a bit as well (like spending extra on a red case and putting in an ssd).

Where's the mobo?

I agree with muskie that that Earthwatts is kinda high, though it isn't too bad in combo with the case.

Oops. The mobo was included in the price above, it just wasnt listed.

ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

BTW, will this mobo support sandy?
