What case is this? You may want to disconnect your case fans and see if it will freeze with just the CPU and video card fans running.

Cooler Master HAF-XB EVO case

I don't have a dedicated video card in it just yet...or any expansion cards for that matter. I'm running off the GPU right now. Should get this video card in the next couple of days.

I was convinced it was the front panel circuitry so I tried process of elimination....

No front panel connections to motherboard - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
USB only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
HD audio only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
reset sw only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
pwr sw only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
HD LED only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
PWR LED only - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing

so I start working my way backwards.......

PWR/HD/RESET/LED's - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
PWR/HD/RESET/LED's + HD audio - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
PWR/HD/RESET/LED's + HD audio + USB - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing
put top back on case with all front panel connections - tap, tap, bang, bang - nothing

I give. It's not like I'm going to be tapping, banging and removing panels once I get it fully setup anyway. Now if it starts freezing on its own then I have a real problem. When this first started all it took was just placing the top panel on and sliding it into place and it would freeze. Now it's intermittent and if it does freeze, it takes a little harder of a tap to make it freeze. I'll keep checking over the next few days and see if it continues but like I said, once I get it fully setup and put in place it's pretty much just going to sit there.
