I do not want to go over 1000, so a couple questions...

I do not intend to Overclock...maybe one day, but not right now...ive never oc'd before, thought it is something i do want to try in the future, right now, i am more concerned in an economical replacement for my old computer.

So a few questions...Vista or XP...32 bit or 64 bit...for gaming purposes mainly, is there any benefit of one over the other. I am already familiar, that xp will not see more then 3.2? of the ram, but ive read that getting four gigs anyways, because of price of ram being so cheap, is the way to go.

Anything that is overkill? Or maybe an upgrade noticeable?

Thanks for help, and the feedback...I am planning on making the purchase on monday, if not earlier.

If you're not overclocking, stick with the stock HSF. Even with mild overclocking, you should be fine with the stock HSF. Might as well get Vista 64 bit to get full use of the RAM. Switch 9800 GT to 4850.

hee hee, i will continue to give smithrwon a hard time about the 4850 here 😉:

What resolution are you planning on gaming at? If 1920x1200 and above, I would suggest an HD4870 for more comfort.

I agree with him about Vista x64. Superfetch in Vista will cache some data from frequently used apps to the RAM, which can speed up things like opening programs. You shouldn't see any negative aspects to gaming on Vista x64 unless you try to play old old 16 bit games. Those won't work

Otherwise, it looks like a pretty solid build, in that it's very similar to what a whole lot of people on here have built, myself included. Blain would mark you down for lack of originality! (But he couldn't fault you for getting good bang for your buck!)

Well yeah, if 1920 by 1200, i'd go for 4870 also. they don't tell us what resolution they're gaming at!

I agree with smithrwon - buy Vista 64bit and switch 9800 GT to 4850 (4870 if you use 1920x1200 resolution).

When i built mine, I went with 4850. My dad was gonna get me a 22" monitor for my birthday but decided to get me a 24" instead haha. I do wish I had a 4870!

smithwon, why change 9800GTX to 4850?, OP stated 22 to 24" LCD, so if anything a 260gtx or 4870 would be better....

Haha, perhaps. There is another post where the OP says 22"-24" LCD, but I didn't mention 4850 at all! 🙂

Ok, so windows vista x64...so that leads to the next question...is 8 gigs worth the purchase?

And as for the screen...i am using a 1440x900, which i wont be upgrading at the moment.

So 4850 is fine by me, and using windows vista 64 is good, wont put me overbudget...but should i up the ram to 8 gigs?

If you can afford it, more ram is always better.

So with MB i have...should i get 4 x 2gb, or 2 x 4gb ram? i see it has four ram slots...does either amount have an issue? or just getting two sets of the ram i have already chosen be fine?

Thanks, trigger has been pulled.

Sometimes you really do know the direction you wantto go, and its just nice to hear confirmation or differing opinions at times, before you do make your final decision.

So went with what i had above, butchanged to the 4850, and got 8gigs of ram, came to 949.50 after s&h, and after rebates will come to 885.00, so thanks again for the input, and i stayed below my budget 🙂 Oh, and of course, going with vista 64...first time with vista, so yah 😛 thats it.

if you're not oc'ing 4 x 2gb should prove to be stable.
