New build problem

Right, I've just finished a building a new pc with the exception of ram. I upgraded mobo to ddr 3 at the last minute, forgot to change the ram!

anyway, I built the rest while I wait for the new ram. powered it up to make sure all the fans spin up nicely. It works fine for about 4 seconds: two case fans and gpu fan come on, cpu fan comes on about a second later, but then it shuts off. After a couple of seconds it repeats.

the cpu install was a little traumatic, so I'm kind of concerned. any ideas when might be wrong? or is it normal for the above to happen with no ram in?!?

thanks!

The problem is there is no RAM. So the system is reseting to try and see if it missed it. Your not going to get much out of it till you get the RAM in there.

Awesome. That's good news. I was worried cos last time I built a pc, one of the ram modules was loose, and it just did that loud beeping thing rather than starting over.

now just need to wait for that new ram and I'm hot to trot.

IMHO, you can avoid a lot of work and frustration if you build outside the box before installing but, there's no sense in doing anything till you have all the parts. Yes, I know it's hard to resist playing with the new 'shinies.'

actually, been thinking about this a bit more - shouldn't it just give error beeps with no RAM in place rather than go into a reboot cycle?
