new build problem.. computer wont turn on

Hello!

I seem to be having a problem with my new build. The computer does not seem to be turning on, no fans, no sound, no movement, nothing. I've switched out the psu but it still does not work so it has led me to suspect that my problem is a faulty motherboard or case cables.

What's strange is every once in a while when I push the power button (on the case), the psu (and cpu) fan will spin momentarily for maybe half a second and stop. When I press the power button again, nothing moves at all.

What motherboard, video card(s), processor, and PSU size?

Of course, the simple, stupid questions...

Did you connect the 2x2/2X4 12 volt connector?
That's often enough to keep a computer from booting.

did you use the right CPU 4pin power connector? (if your PSU has an 8pin it should split into two 4 pin) this connector will be next to the CPU (about 1-3 inches? usually towards the I/O area)

this happened to one of my friends builds, hope it helps
 
this may sound stupid, but is the power cable plugged into the wall?
does that outlet have power?
 
cpu (AMD II X2 245 2.9G AM3 RT)
motherboard (MB BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 RTL)
psu (Corsair 430-Watt Builder)
ram (2gb)

and yes, I've connected 24 pin and the 4 pin (though the mobo has only 2 pins) from the psu onto the mobo and it does not boot up. The psu cord is also plugged into a working power strip.
 
Hey...you KNOW we gotta ask those kinds of questions...
Nest would be to make sure the CPU is seated properly...no bent pins, etc.
If that looks good, then maybe check the RAM, although in my (limited) experience, RAM errors still go to POST.
Otherwise, bad PSU? Do you have access to another power supply that you can test with to verify that yours is good/bad?

You say your mother board only has a two pin cpu power connection? However looking on the website I can spot a 4 pin (white 3 rounded 1 squared connection) right next to the cpu, are you perhapse confusing the two pin cpu fan connector?

Yep...top left, 4 pin ATXPWR2 connector.
(see page 14 of the manual)

your right! I meant to say 4 pin on the mobo.. and i used the 8 pin to power it (can be split into 2 4's). It still does not work 🙁

And thank you guys for all the help! I have tried another psu and it still did not boot so I think my conclusion is a dead mobo

Should be a green led that lights up when plugged in (doesn't need to be turned on just needs power) if that doesn't turn on then I would guess mobo.
 
Remove the CPU and check for bent pins.

Since you listed 2GB of RAM, I'm assuming that it is only 1 stick? If you have another DDR3 DIMM laying around, try it. You could also try the DIMM in another DDR3 computer.
 
Hey guys.. looks like i still need your help

The replacement mobo came and i seem to having the same problem. (again, sometimes the psu fan will move slightly when i press the power button but it immediately stops after) I've already tried it with another psu and it does the same thing. Could it be the cables from the pc case?

I have no clue...

and by the way, I've checked the pins and they seem fine. I only have 1 ram stick so I cant test that,..)
 
if you have good lighting and a decent camera take some pics of every inch of your computer so we can see if there is a cable missing or you are doing something wrong,

Eariler, I mentioned how only the psu fan would spin (for ~1 second) when I would press the power button. The cpu fan spins now though im not sure what i did.... but it lasts ~1 second, just like the psu.

The fan (on the cpu and psu) do not move everytime i press the power button. It only spins if if i unplug the mobo from the psu and replug everything back.

shot in the dark, but flip the power front panel wires. I've heard of cases when the polarity matters.
 
im pretty sure its either the cpu or the case cables (probably not)... Is there anyway of checking if they are doa?

I tried your suggestion jchu and it doesnt seem to work.

I have seen this issue before but cannot remember exactly what caused it. It seems that something is grounding or an electrical connection is not fully connected.

Something is wrong here. My advice is to pull all connections, check them to ensure the electrical connections are properly seating with each other, and carefully reseat each connection.

Maybe the wires for the front case panel are not properly connected to the pins at the bottom right of the MB.
 
I double checked to see if all connections were in place (including the ram).. but it still does not work. Im frustrated and lost at this point.

I do however, appreciated all the advice 🙂
