Hey guys, I've been looking for a new build to mostly play games/coding on my 24" 1080p monitor. My plan is to buy a video card now (6870 unless theres something better) and sli/crossfire it later on. Ill be ordering from newegg canada only.

Heres my build:
Keep in mind, I already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Rosewell case

corsair 750W
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817139006

i5 760
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115067

1tb seagate
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16822148433

xfx 6870
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814150506

G skill 2x2gb
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231303

Asus P7P55D-E
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131620

So, my questions are:
Will my video card fit into that case? How would I tell because I'm not sure how the dimensions work.

Is that asus motherboard a good one at its price or is there something better?

I've actually built this in the last 30 min, because I have 3 more finals coming up in the next 7 days. This build is a present/reward for me if I pass them all:D. Please tell me if theres any incompatibly that i might have missed or anything that i can replace cause its got a better bang for buck value. I'm all about bang for buck:biggrin:

EDIT: sorry forgot to mention my budget which is from 1k to 1300 CAD. I am also not bias towards any company.

Solid choices, but I would make some changes in certain categories.

The motherboard you picked is too pricey (for my tastes), this would be a cheaper pick. Basically, pick functions on the MB that you want (USB3, SATA3, PCI-E slots, etc.)

Are you going to be overclocking? If you are, the RAM you picked is fine. Otherwise, for a non-overclocked system, here is some cheaper 1333.

Also, what games do you play consistently? If you want best bang-for-buck, a GTX460 1GB will pretty much play anything @ 1080p. Take money saved for a future GPU upgrade perhaps (or an SSD, though with that budget, it won't be a problem fitting one in)?

The PSU is a bit too hefty for that, so this will be the better choice for a 460. Maybe a Corsair TX650 if you want a 470/68xx.

Personally, I avoid Seagate drives. This Samsung is a much better and faster drive. As for SSD choices, you can wait for Intel G3, or pick a SF-1200 (Corsair Force, Vertex 2, Agility 2, Mushkin, G.Skill Phoenix Pro, etc.) or the Intel G2 (X25-M).

Another thing, I've had little experience with Rosewill cases, but I would suggest looking at the long-trusted Antec 300.

Hey MisterDonut, thx for the suggestions as they are good!

The MSI motherboard does seam like a good deal and a decent overcloacker (will be overclocking later on). The reason why I wanted to get the 750W and 6870 is so that later down the road, I can pick up another 6870 for cheap and crossfire them. I would like to "try" and max out the latest games such as metro 2033 and bad company 2 so i think the 6870 is a little better suited for that task.

Would that be a better solution than getting your MSI mobo, cheap 650W psu, more expensive gtx 570 and getting a better video card 2 years later?

I really did consider getting an SSD but they still don't seam worth it ATM (although almost there). Unless i can get say a 80gb for around 100 bucks then i'll just wait a few month.

Oh and will the 6870 or a gtx 570 fit into those either the rosewell or antec cases?

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! The bolded is a much better plan than trying to Crossfire "down the road". I've seen it happen many times, people spend a bunch of money on Crossfire/SLI gear, then never end up getting the card. They essentially cheated themselves out of a better GPU up front for the possibility of getting a performance bump down the line.

Ok alright, I guess that makes sense. Would you recommend a good performer for its price that is stronger than the gtx 460?

I was thinking the 570 but then again a 6970 is the same price on newegg canada and for 100 dollar increase over the 6870, i dont see how that justifies the increase over the it.

I like to stay away from the gtx 400 series as i heard they run hot and loud? correct me if i'm wrong.

EDIT: And how about the 5870 which is $300. but then again 6870 is a tad slower for 50 bucks cheaper. ARGHHH they priced it so confusing. I cant seam to find the sweet-spot!

I dodged that "future crossfire" trap myself, which if I remember was thanks to mfenn. Settled with good mobo, 550w psu, used those savings towards a hd5870 on sale and nice 23" HD monitor. MORE than pleased.

The 480, 470, and 465 are GF100 chips which have huge power issues. The GTX 460 is the MUCH better GF104. GTX 460 is (at least in America) the best bang-for-the-buck you can get both singly and in SLI*. 1GB models can be had for $165 after rebate, so with SLI that gives you GTX 580 performance for less than GTX 570 price.

* this was true as of two days ago. I haven't yet read the article on the 6900 series or priced things since since.

Pretty disappointed in the 6900s since they're barely faster than the 5800s. Don't really want to get the gtx 460 either since it can barely handel crysis at 1080p very high.

My ideal single solution card will be something that can pull 45-50 fps on crysis maxed at 1080p.

Any ideas guys??

Disappointed or no, that's the range you're looking at for single-card:
6950/6970/GTX 570.

Or keep an eye out for deals on the 5870. Over Black Friday weekend Newegg had one for $215.

5850 is slightly below your performance spec, but Newegg US has one for $172 after rebate. If .ca has one similarly priced that's a pretty darned good deal considering its overclockability. (Not gonna run .ca for ya'. I'm on dial-up right now and there just aren't enough of you Canadians around for such knowledge to be broadly useful to me.)

Does the gtx 570 overclock well? I know that 6970's real bad, probly cause they pushed it to the limit just to keep up.

I'd keep an eye out for a 5870 deal. Still a solid card, and like Dom said, it dropped really low over BF. Otherwise, lots of people are hopping around on good GTX 470's or 6870's deals.

Agree.

Op, if Crysis is your main interest, look no further than the 6950. It has the same Crysis performance as the GTX 570 (48.5 at 1080P) and is $50 cheaper.

haha too late, just bought it this afternoon. I got a xfx 5870 for 292 with a 30$ mail in rebate. The xfx 6950 is $313 with no rebate. So.. a $50 dollars more for 10 fps max in some games is not really worth it for me. Hopefully the 5870 can be over clocked a bit.

Sounds like a good deal!
