Could be both but more often than not it is the cable. As to the performance of your new system yes a new HDD will help but things are still going to take a few seconds to open. I have a comparable system and IE takes 3-4 seconds. and opening someting like Sandra takes 7-9.

You got to be kidding! IE loads in like ~1s or less for me.

Yeah when I checked IE (I use firebird) I wasn't thinking that I also had SETI, musicmatch, and BS running. It opens quicker than I can see when everything else is off. Sandra still takes a few seconds as do a few other programs.

Morfik:

I'd bet that drive's ATA33, though it wouldn't make too much a difference anyway. I guess look at the non-Raptor WDs and Seagate offerings, or go with a Maxtor again (Though a friend of mine had a Maxtor crap out on him after only a few months use. Lemon, I guess, but terrible still). Lots of people tend to stay away from Hitachi because of their deathstar lineage. I didn't have any personal experiences with the flawed drives, but also have never had a IBM drive quit out on me out of the two I've owned so far had. In fact, my 22GXP has been running for four years and counting.

Don't forget the driver disk that comes with the MSI when installing the SATA drive.

Just one more thing.... I have a system that I had to put an XP1500 in for a few days, but it has a 5-10 year old (not sure) Seagate barracuda 7200 rpm SCSI.(9 gig 3 1/2 inch half height) But that system boots faster than almost anything in the house !!!! On an identical build on the other side of the house has a 7200 rpm IDE 8 meg cache, XP2000, and there is no comparison. It actually boots quicker than my Athlon 64 3000+ with a Maxtor 7200 rpm 8 meg cache SATA !!!! The hard disk can make a big difference. Dump that slow 6 gig ASAP !
