New build OS

Heyas all,

I'll be upgrading my box here in the next week or so. Basically, it's a ph II 720 BE X3 box with 8 gb of 1066 ram. I'd like to take advantage of the ram in the OS, but I'm concerned about compatibility. Leaning toward 64-bit for sure.

I use my box for occasional gaming, some 3d like Vue and Poser, photo editing (Photoshop Elements 7, and occasional video editing (Premiere pro 2.0). Is the win7 7057 beta going to be stable/compatible enough for me? Nothing really mission critical, but I don't deal well with instability.

What would you put on? And no, I'm not up for Linux as a main system...=P

The 64-bit 7057 build isn't so great (32-bit works fine). 64-bit Vista works great for me, but any 64-bit build of Windows 7 hasn't worked quite as well for me. If you want to take full advantage of the RAM, I'd say Vista 64-bit up until a better 64-bit release of W7.

I've heard that Vista is a resource hog. How is it compared with Win7 64 7057?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

There's a lot of negative info going around about Vista. It's mostly false. It sucked in the beta and early on, but it's very good now, IMO. It's a "hog" compared to XP, as it needs 2GB of RAM...but you have that covered easily. Also, the way Vista uses free RAM, indexes files, etc, makes the user think it's a hog, when it's really just doing as much as it can.

Win7 is definitely a good bit better than Vista...but, sadly, the 64-bit builds are very lacking (performance, compatibility, and stability) compared to the 32-bit builds. Because of your amount of RAM, though, you need 64-bit. Because of that, your best 64-bit option is Vista.

And for anyone else, benchmarks for 7057 64-bit are pretty bad compared to Vista. I'd stay away from that build (32-bit 7057 works great for me, though).

I can see a difference between a Vista 64 install and a Windows 7 64 bit install. Vista definitely takes up more RAM... but I have a quad core and 8 gigs so it is not really noticeable.

We have two low end vista laptops that the family uses. They came with 1gb and were a little sluggish... threw in another gb of RAM and they run fine.

I think for someone considering a Windows OS, the better question is which edition of Vista x64 should you get? Basic, Premium, Business or Ultimate.

I am defiently not one to recommend a beta. But if i was buidling i would just use the win7 RC, RC should be out really soon, and then wait for the win 7 release. Bad time to buy vista.

Win7 RC should be out in the next few weeks... according to rumors.

Yeah, the RC might be a good 64-bit OS to run. 7057, however, is not (and the previous builds are pretty "meh" compared to 32-bit).

Just run Vista 64-bit and be happy until Win7. 🙂

I'm runnig a 5000+ on a ASUS M3A32 MVP deluxe and dual booting win7 7000 and fedora 10 with few issues, both x64 versions. the PHII shouldn't run too differently from my 5000+. Will try 7057 later today. have it already burned and wait at home.

W7 64 doesn't feel as solid as Vista64 to me and it shouldn't since it's still not officially ready yet. I love Vista64. Great OS and very stable.

Lot of FUD about Vista ,your rig specs in your first post will fly with Vista x64,I would never recommend putting any beta OS on any new or upgrading system.

Btw I'm still using humble 3800+ x2 cpu,4gb with Vista x64 and its fast, your rig however will be awesome.

If you don't mind playing with pre RC versions of 7, build 7068 is now out in both 32 and 64 bit flavors. No I can't give you a direct link on how to obtain it, but remember the letters TPB or you could always have a small nova find it for you.
