Hey guys I'm building a system for my little brother and looking to speed no more then 600 bucks. I'm probably gonna get a new video card and give him my 7800gt. Hes probably going to use an older monitor I have sitting around, but if I can squeeze it in the budget it'd be nice to get him a new one. Hes a gamer so I'm looking for good performance. Whatever I get I will probably want to overclock it a good bit. I'm already familar with s939 so I was thinking of going that route. Any opinions ideas welcome thanks!

s939 is dead

Look into Intel Core 2 Duo's. You can get a chip for about $100 if you look around and they overclock like CRAZY.

I wouldn't go s939 at this point for two reasons
1. No future upgrade path
2. s939 components(CPU/ram) are in relatively short supply and are more expensive than compareable AM2 and intel 775 systems.

For $600 sans GPU and monitor you should be able to build a pretty nice rig. I'm assuming the cost of your new video card in not included in the budget, but an OS is.

Gigabyte DS3L $100

E2140 $75

2gb DDR2-800 ram $57

WD 250gb HDD $65

Antec Sonata III case with 500w earthwatts PS $130

Windows XP home $90

That comes to $517 +shipping

That would pretty much make a state of the art gaming box minus ultra high end graphics.
The E2140 easily overclock to 3.0-3.2ghz or higher and is a little bang for the buck monster
