New Build - Lost DVD Playback Capability - Is ASPI Suspect?

Just rebuilt a system. PX 716 SA reads CD's just fine, though it's unable to install any DVD based games, or playback any DVD titles. Launching a DVD will hang both PowerDVD 5.0 or RoxioDVD within a few seconds. Have not had a chance to try any other dvd software.

Specs:

Plextor PX 716-SA (worked fine on last system)
ASUS A8N32-SLI
Dual Raptor Raid 0
AMD FX-60
ATI 1900XT
Audigy 2 ZS
Antec Phantom 500w
BIOS: PIO and DMA(?) both set to auto

I'm seeing an occasional error in Event Viewer:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0
Event Category: (2)
Event ID: 1073
Date: 2/22/2006
Time: 6:58:10 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SD-C63A91172E7C
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1073 ) in Source ( ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Updates to the IIS metabase were aborted because IIS is either not installed or is disabled on this machine. To completely uninstall ASP.NET from IIS, please re-enable IIS and unregister ASP.NET using aspnet_regiis.exe /u.

Have not acted on this message because I have no idea what it means or what the implications of following it through would be.

I was reading around a bit on the forums and found a link to Adaptec's latest Aspi release. Not sure if that would solve my problem but thought I'd give it a try. Upon launching the included Install.Bat file I get the DOS window where I'm supposed to indicate which windows version (X82) to install but it says "Press any key to continue" Pressing any key immediately closes the window. I am unsure how I was supposed to specify a windows version but the readme indicated that if a version wasnt specified in step 1 that I would be prompted later.....there is no later in my case. Press any key.....bye bye DOS window.

Anyhow, not even sure if I am pointed in the right direction here. Any suggestions would be great. If more info is needed just let me know what.

Thanks.

Remove the Audigy 2 ZS and it'll work again.

It wont matter which PCI slot you use.

It doesn't matter if it's got drivers installed or software installed.

It doesn't matter if you switch DVD drive.

If you fix it then tell me how, please, right now i'm using my other computer for DVD playback.

(I also have this problem on an A8N32 with the audigy 2 [with the external box, same one?] if you haven't guessed)

My drive is fine and worked in my backup rig. Buying a new one is not going to solve this problem, but thanks for the.....ehhhh.....helpful input ;p

Bobthelost...... I'll remove the audio card and post the results.

I tried this with no luck. I've tried another couple of DVD software as well, and while they don't crash like PowerDVD when trying to playback, they still are unable to playback any dvd content at all.

The error that you are seeing, is "ASP.NET" .. NOT "ASPI". Two totally different things. You shouldn't need to install ASPI on XP to watch DVDs, although some other CD-burning software may like to have it installed.

I would in fact check your version of ATAPI.SYS, there have been some MS updates to it, assuming that you have the DVD burner attached to a motherboard IDE channel.

Got it working.

I have a Silicon Image SATA connector near the rear I\O panel on my A8N32-SLI. First I tried connecting my SATA DVD to this port though in this configuration the drive was not recognized by Windows.

At that point I put the DVD back on the Nvidia SATA plug though this time instead of using #4 I used #3. For whatever reason it works fine now. For some reason the 4th SATA plug has some issues.

Thanks for the help guys
