Hi,

I builded a new computer for a couple of weeks ago and today it stoped working. This is the spec :

CPU : Intel Core i7 2600K
Motherboard : Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P B3 (BIOS F6)
Graphic : Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 1280MB Windforce
Memmory : Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz XMS3 1,5V OS
Harddrive : Samsung 830 128 GB SSD
Chassi : Fractal Design Define r3
Powersupply : Corsair 650W Modulärt

Today when I started the computer the following happend :

1. Press power button
2. Fans starts and 6 diods lights up on the motherboard(green/yellow/red)
3. Computer shutsdown after couple of sek(not even the BIOS splash is shown)
4. Computer start up again after a couple of sek
5. BIOS splash is shown but its not possible to enter the BIOS
6. Computer shutsdown.

And this is running in a loop over and over again

I installed a new BIOS (F6) a couple of days ago on Gigabytes request to make the start up faster. After the update I set my memmory to 1600Mhz and this worked great. The computer did hower pompted a dialog at startup twice about overcloking faild and that its setting it back to 1333 mhz? The computer did however run well.

Yesterday there was slot of windows updates(after fresh installation) so I let the computer run untill it was finished.

Today when I started the computer i got the problem that is descirbed above.

Finding the problem

This is what I have tested :

1. Remove the memory sticks
2. Remove the hd cables (power/SATA)
3. Remove Graphiccard
4. Switch Powersupply (Antec 650 watt)
5. Removed the battery and short-circuit it to set BIOS to default settings

I have tried to start the computer Between each step but the exact same problem is pressent. I Do not have it hooked up to a display right now but It does the same restarts.

I could conintue with the seach, swithc memmiry, CPU, Graphiccard but is it worth the work? Or Is it defently the motherbord that is failing and needs to be replaced?

Thankful for all help.

BestRegards

pull the board out of the case and put it on something nonconductive. the cardboard motherboard box works good for this. use the least amount of peripherals you can. so, one stick of ram, processor, built in video rather than a card. no hard drive, no anything else.

But I have tried to strip the computer down, the only thing left on the motherboard now is the CPU, Power supply and the wires to power on button.

There is a power cord connected next to the CPU, when pulling this and starting the computer it restarts even faster. Probably not enouth power.

Just like he said. Take the mobo out of the box and put it on a cardboard sheet.

Remove all connectors. Connect the PSU cables to motherboard, in proper places.

Test one stick of RAM at a time, in all slots. This will be much easier to do with the mobo out. Yes it is worth it.

I have now done what you requested.

Motherboard with CPU mounted on the motherboard box, nothing else. Same problem
Added one stick of ram, same problem.

Anything else I should try?

I did notice that my old computer could not start (windows logon freeze) with this ram but I guess that I have some specific settings for the old memmory that doese not work with this new one.

What RAM does your old computer use?

You said you took out the battery to reset the CMOS. Have you tried jumping the CLR_CMOS pins manually? I would try shorting them out, for ten seconds, at least FIVE TIMES. Do it five times just because sometimes you think you are making a connection, but it's not.

Then try swapping around RAM again. Do you hear a POST beep? Gigabyte boards have a POST beep that can diagnose an error- listen for this.

Try starting up with different video cards. Try starting using thr onboard video. Something should work.

I have tried to clear the CMOS serveral times by following the manual(shorting them), no change.

There is no sounds at all besides from the fans.

I have switch around the rams but never just tried the port2(you are supose to use port1 or port 1&2). I have also tried diffrent memory sticks.

I have tried two diffrent graphiccards but now I am testing without, the onboard GPU(i7) should work.

I think that the motherboard needs to be sent back.

Yeah... No POST means it's not even powering on correctly. Sorry for the bad situation :(

It sounds like the board is stuck in some sort of auto-configuration loop but it isn't able to settle down on some good settings. It could be that board died or that the new BIOS has some sort of bug.
