Ok guys, my motherboard died on my opteron build. Since its not covered under warranty I figure it's time to upgrade.

3.6ghz seems like a reasonable goal 50% overclock. And will probably fullfill my cpu needs until affordable quad cores come out.

I have the koolance 1000 watt lian-li setup, already with requisite cpu block.

Existing video card is x1900xt 512mb. Which may or may not be upgraded to a 8800 gts... I figure 150+Old card might get me there? Do you think thats worth while?

I will not be doing sli or crossfire. So those are not selling points for me.

So which motherboard should I get? Asus Commando? or maybe a evga 680 motheboard?
Have the stability issues been solved on the 680i chipset?

Things I do need on the motherboard are three vacant pci slots. B/c of how my radiator is setup in the case the last pci slot in the motherboard is unusable. The motherboard will be mounted inverted.

Which memory should I get? Is it worthwhile to spend the extra change and pick up a set of ocz flexx LC memory? Do i really need memory that fast to hit my speed target?
Or would I do fine with 800mhz at cas 4?

IS there any advantage in going one step up on the conroe line up, since I intend to overclock?

Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Actual Existing Equipment list
Koolance Black pc4-1025 case link
Koolance CPU-305-v10 10 mm CPU BLOCK Cpu Block Link
2 x Koolance GPU-180-v06 Chipset Block Chipset Block link
Koolance Vid-205-L06 VGA BLOCk VGA BLOCK Link
+ The Memory coolers, which I dont think do anything.. so I'll probably Sell them.

ATI X1900xt 512mb pcie
Soundblaster Xifi Fatal1ty
Linksys PCI 802.11 a/b/b PCI WIFI Adapter
2x 74 GB WD Raptor SATA
2x 500GB WD HDD SATA
1x 320GB SEAGATE SATA

PSU Antec neo 550w
------------------------------------------
So Asus Commando + Intel e6600 + ???? memory = 3.6ghz
Does the commando unlock down any of the conroe chips?
Does the corsair dominator 6400d4 represent a good value, and adequete for my needs?
B/c I gather that I will not need anything more than 800mhz ddr2 memory at cas 4 to hit my target. And I can't see the point of paying 80 percent more in memory to hit cas 3, or to pay more for 1066 memory when my processor will probably not be able to handle anything more than 1600mhz fsb

DDR2 800mhz is more than enough, I would still recommend a good kit for $250-300

Crucial Ballistix 4-4-4-12
or
G.Skill 2GBHZ 4-4-4-12

Don't waste your money on the corsair ram, not necessary....
