Ok, I'm at my wits end trying to figure out what is causing these constant freezing. My computer would freeze several times an hour for about 2-3 minutes. During that time the computer is completely unresponsive. Afterwards, an error would pop up saying "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" and then the computer would be normal again for the next few minutes until it freezes again.
Here is the build and what I've tried so far. Everything was purchased new this past weekend from fry's.
-Intel 2600k processor
-Asrock p67 extreme4 motherboard rev3
-16gb of G.skill ripjaws ddr-1600
-BFG 550w power supply
-Gigabyte 6870 Video card
-500gb samsung spinpoint hard drive
-Windows 7 x64
Here's what I tried so far to pinpoint the problem.
-Ran memtest for 24hrs with no errors
-Ran HD Tune and no errors reported
-Swapped out video card with my old evga 470gtx. Still froze and then popping up display driver stopped responding...
-Tried individual memory sticks in varying memory slots.
-Tried video cards in different pci-e slots.
-Tried Windows 7 x86 borrowed from a friend.
-Tried disabling c3 c6 in bios as suggested somewhere on the web.
-Set memory setting to 12800 instead of auto in bios
-Updated bios to newest 1.70 from asrock.
-Swapped out power supply with new Antec tp-550 550w power supply.
-Swapped out Hard drive with Western digital 320gb drive.
-Swapped out memory with a 4gb corsair 1066
-Tried both video cards in a amd setup for 3 day with no problem.
-Tried different sata port
-Installed an old xfi gamer sound card to eliminate sound driver possibility.
-Fresh install of windows with no driver or update installed.
-Fresh install of windows with all updated drivers and windows update fully updated. Driver 275.33 for nivida card and 11.5 for ati card.
-Temps for both cpu and gpu never raises above 40c
-Tried unseating and reseating everything several times.
The only thing I have not tried is an different board and processor as I don't have any extra. I don't think I can return them back to fry's because my in-laws puppy decided to make lunch out of the box's and receipt for them. Anyways, any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
