A buddy asked me to put together a new system for him. He will be using it for mainly office, internet, and some photo work. He wants a quiet putter and would like his kids to be able to game on it but gaming is not the most important aspect of the system.

He's what I've come up with:

ANTEC "SONATA" with 380W Power Supply - $99.00
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - $223.00
ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu Aluminum - $35.99
ASUS "K8V SE Deluxe" K8T800 for AMD Socket 754 CPU - $118.00
Mushkin 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3500 Level One Dual Pack - $278.00
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD800JD - $72.00
Western Digital 200GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD2000JD - $128.50
NU Technology Black 8X DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model DDW-082 - $67.00
Logitech Cordless MX Duo USB/ PS/2 104keys - $75.00
Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Certified Speaker System - $139.00
Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack SP1a - $141.00
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600PRO "ULTIMATE" - $169.00

Right at $1400. What do you think?

Thanks, rb56

Looks good. However, you're wasting your money on that 9600, IMO. I would go for a cheap 5900xt or even a 9800 pro if you're going to be spending that much.

get the chaintech nforce3 250. its better and cheaper.
get a gig of mushkin basic 3200, WAY cheaper and you will never notice a difference
for the price of that 9600pro, you can get a 5900XT which blows it away.

other than these complaints, it looks good

since it is NOT for gaming, i would say that you can get a cheaper 9600pro than that... good pick on the card tho for a mid range.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of the ultimate for the fanless design. One of his requirements is a very quiet system. I haven't looked at the chaintech board but I will check it out. One of the reasons that I picked the Asus is that it has all the features that I want and I'd like to check it out. 😀

I understand why you went for the 9600 ultimate, but to be honest your powersupply and hard drives would probably drown out whatever noise would come from 9800 pro. If you really want it to be quiet, get a fortron/seasonic power supply and consider getting seagate hard drives instead.
