new build- cd drives won't open--No help yet? Come on!

It's really strange but my cd/dvd drives won't open if the IDE cable is connected to them (if I unhook the ide cables leaving just the power hooked up they open fine) Both of my drives do this so I guess it's not the drives but it's the motherboard. I didn't have time to mess with it too much b/c I had to leave for work. I brought the manual with me and I discovered something. I had the power switch connected to half of the power switch and the other half connected to the reset part. I really hope this is the problem. Can anyone help?

my monitor doesn't seem to get a signal as well.

You also want to check and make sure the cable is connected right, i.e. the red-striped wire on the ribbon cable is supposed to line up with Pin 1 of the IDE connectors on both the motherboard and the drive.

if that doesn't work, you bought an MSI, and I am truely sorry.

I have the cables connected right. I've also tried a different cable. Do you think it could have anything to do with hooking up the power switch incorrectly?

Probably a backwords IDE cable.

within the last few years, cables are made so they cannot be inserted incorrectly.
if this man's cables are backwards, then he managed to defeat the childproofing they put into them.

does anyone know if me connecting the power switch wrongly would cause something like my monitor not coming on or my cd/dvd drives not opening.

Did you ever find out what was wrong?I'm having the same problem

Sounds like a ground problem to me. Try pulling the motherboard, placing it on a non-conductive surface (i.e. cardboard or a static bag) and try to boot it to see if it makes a difference.

If it still does it, you may have a faulty motherboard.

If you can get into the bios then no you didnt mess anything up. If you cannot even get into the bios (ie if you cannot get it to POST), then yes you could have blown the reset circuit resulting in the reset signal being permanently active.

How many IDE cables have you seen in the last few years?
