While browsing for hardware I have discovered that I can get a qx9650 for less than the price of a q9650. (300ish) (Ebay)

This would lower my build price and pretty much guarantee that I meet my goal of 4 Ghz.

Is a qx9650 a bad performer clock to clock against an I7??
Would my memory bandwidth suffer with DDR2 or dual channel DDR3?

I still have a sealed retail box I7 930 that I can get about 200 for to help with cost.

This would be a fresh build.. new mobo and ram etc.

Gaming is my main concern as I cannot imagine desktop stuff not performing well on any modern quad? I may go with 2 5770 in crossfire. I have noticed socket 775 mobo selections are getting slimmer.

Hmf. Don't even bother. The QX9650 is definitely no match for the i7. Just do the 930. You can't go wrong, and you'll be future-proof for at least a couple years. DO NOT get the Yorkfield. I bet every other respondent will say the same thing. If I were doing a new build, the 930 would be the only choice for me. With good air cooling, 4 GHz is almost a certainty.

build with the 930. if you already have one i cant think of a single reason not to continue with that build. most QX9650s dont overclock higher on average than Q9650s anyway, and my Q9650 is hitting 4.2GHz give or take. if your goal is only 4GHz, most 930s should do that easily. i have talked to several people who have seen 4GHz on stock voltage no problem with 930s, where as i saw about 3.8 with my Q9650 and my friends 920 got to 3.8 as well. you should get a much better OC out of that 930 than you will a QX9650, and you will probably use a lot less power to do it as well.

Thanks for the Input.. its unanimous so I will stick with the I7 930.

Newegg has a couple mobos on sale that I will now go research.

ROFL The 930 would stomp the qx9650.

i should know i have one.

The QX9650 will even lose to some Q9650's because the QX9650 isnt an E0 stepping.
Its a C1.
