Go with Opty 165 for future investment if you decide to overclock later and it is cheaper than X2 4800+. You won't find much 4800+ in stock anymore.

is opeteron really good for oc? Is it dual core or is it like athlon fx which is single core? I think opteron was released a lot earlier than the x2's right?

Depends on the model.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Opteron_microprocessors

The Opteron line has been AMD's server chip offering for quite a while now but it has been updated in line with the Athlon, all the way to dual-core and supporting 8-way configurations.

Anything starting with a 1 is a meant for a single-socket motherboard and can be either single or dual core depending on the next two digits in the model number. The 165 recommended above, for example, is a dual-core chip rated for 1.8Ghz with 1Mb of cache per core.

Opty 165 rules.

I owned an X2 3800 and could barely squeeze 2.6Ghz out of it. That was pushing 1.5v and the X2 chip freaked out over 50C.

The Opty 165 goes much further on far less volts, and seems to handle higher temps without as much fuss. I can load it at 62C for hours and not throw errors. The X2 3800 would start throwing errors any time it broke 55C.

Of course, the stepping is going to make a huge difference, but there seem to be a lot more good stepping Optys than X2s.
