New build...1gb..AMD 64.....frightningly slow???

Hi all...I hope someone can help. I have just put a new system together

Athlon 64 3200
Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9
1gb Ram...dual channel
200gb Sata Hard drive
Windows XP
etc

The problem I am having is that the Pc is extremely slow...looking at the performance logs....memory usage is between 90 and 100% when the system is idle

Any ideas as to what's going on?

Thanks

1) has the system been exposed to an unfirewalled connection to the Internet at any time, during or after Windows installation?

2) what version of Windows, is it Service Pack 2 built-in or is it some older version?

3) what are you using now for firewall and antivirus protection?

Was in same state before connected to internet. Protected by Norton internet security. Yes, it is windows with service pack 2 built in.

Ok, Service Pack 2 is your friend, that's good news 🙂

What process is using all the resources, when you look in Task Manager? You got your chipset drivers installed, correct?

Hi guys...thanks for you responses...sorry about the delay in replying....time difference and all that. Anyway I seem to have solved my problem. I tested my RAM with memtest86 and it was a total mess...even messing with timings couldn't sort it.....so I replaced it...also did a XP re-install and now the PC is flying. So seems likely it was bad ram although it could have been that and a fresh install??

Perhaps the bad RAM screwed up the original install and you could've had the same issues with good RAM, who knows.
