Building a new rig. Should I go 1150 or 1151. I dont do much OC and spend almost all my time playing games on it.

Is the 1151 i7 worth grabbing over the 1150 Devil Canyon i7. Going to match it up with a M2 pcie ssd and a 390x.

Thanks for any input guys

I personally don't like building a new PC on an older platform when the new stuff is and has been available for a while. I feel like it's a sin and I will be judged for it.

As long as the 4790K is $299 and the 6700K is like $420-$430, my vote is for the 4790K.

Thank you guys !!!

Now part two.

I can afford the i7 but is it going to help in gaming or is it just wasting my money?

An i5 should be good for 90%+ of games for 2-3 years, but there are a select few games that already run better on i7's.

1151 boards are likely going to have more M.2 slots.

are you overclocking? if not the i7 k has a fair advantage due to its high stock clock speed
if you do oc then the 6600k is fairly competitive and definitely better value at the moment

here is some tests i just ran on a 3770k with ht on vs off which is the main advantage the i7 has
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2455994

if you are overclocking i would go with a 5820k over the 4790k\6700kas the extra cores mean more to games than ht

if your system is only 2-3 years old then you probably have a ivy\sandy? so your not going to see a huge improvement from upgrading it

Currently running a 4690K haswell with just the turbo enabled. But my wifes old amd rig is past its prime so this will become hers and I will just be forced to build myself a new one

Its no brainer to avoid Skylake i7s right now. The i7-6700K is $419.99. For that kind of money, you're better off getting a Core i7-5930K for $459.99.

I think for the first time ever, there's a good argument to be made for Intel quad-cores with hyper-threading (for gamers, the value was always there for heavy users, media editing, etc.). DirectX 12 games are going to be able to make use of those extra threads, and it'll be really interesting to see benchmarks in native DX12 games for folks with 6-core/12 thread, 8-core/16-thread systems.

I'm very excited to see how my i7-5960X stacks up in games that come out in the next few years, although the fact that developers have to worry about crappy consoles instead of pushing the true limits of PC tech are also an issue...

I would highly recommend the 4790k and overclock it to a 24/7 4.5 and leave it be. As long as you have a decent gpu, gtx 970/980 you will bet set for awhile :) I generally upgrade to the newest cpu's as soon as they come out, but the 6700k for the price to performance ratio really isn't worth it compared to the 4790k. Hell, they are only 249.99 at micro center right now, you can't beat that.

You dont say what M.2 SSD. If its one of those PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 SSDs. Then you want LGA1151 or LGA2011-v3. Else you have to sacrifice x8 lanes for the GPU on LGA1150 to get full speed.

Both LGA1151 and LGA2011-v3 uses DDR4.

I'd personally build with a 6700K, but wait to build for retailers to stop gouging.

I think that in the next two years, many people will wish that they had bootable NVMe and more than four cores. My 4.5GHz 3570K is starting to take a hit on by the latest games. Even if it's because of lazy porting, "m0ar coors" still helps.

+1
At the current pricing, the 4790K is the better chip for gaming.

AtenRa also makes a good point -- If you are spending $400+ dollars on the cpu,
probably wiser to go with Intel's 6 core.

And your point? 1% performance difference doesn't matter.

You picked one of the least important reasons why Z170 should be the platform of choice in the OP's scenario.

Good question.

If 1150 I was going to go with one of the Asrock boards and samsung M.2 ssd.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157603

Don't go with that board if you are choosing Z97 with an M.2 SSD. Asrock Z97 Extreme 6 has the Ultra M.2 with PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. Just keep in mind with that board you lose USB 3.1.

If you don't mind overclocking, I would also consider the i7 5820K + Asrock X99 Extreme 4 platform. This platform should last you even beyond 3 years and you'll have the option of dropping in 8-10 core Broadwell-Es in 3 years. If you don't care to overclock, then maybe you can wait another month or so for i7 6700K prices to drop.

Here is a good i7 6700K kit for $617:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2507600
vs.
Pricing the i7 4790K kit (make sure to include at least DDR3 2133mhz memory) = i7 4790K ($340) + Asrock Z97 Extreme 6 ($123) + 16GB DDR3 2133 ($60) = $523

About $100 more for Skylake. I think in your particular case, I would probably pay extra since Intel is unlikely to have any new CPU architecture in terms of IPC worth buying over Skylake for probably 5 years. You also get USB 3.1 and DDR4 that you can re-use.

Do you ever drive down to Kansas City for any reason? Or know someone there? The Micro Center there has the i7 4790k in stock for $249.99.
