New budget AMD home system suggestions!

😕
Hey guys! Time for me to replace the 5 year P3 with somethin new. I already made up mind to AMD
Now a couple of questions:
should i get the socket 754 or 939? On one hand.. if i get 754/sempron, it's a really nice deal. On the other hand 939/worst A64 is said to be very future-proofed for upgrades...However..isn't it also true that when new faster (dual-core maybe) amd processor for socket 939 apear in the future..it would kinda need another board anyways?!...cause of other technologies they migh come up with...DDR 500!!!...i dunnoo..then what do i do? i'm stuck with a board that only gets up to ddr400
Also...i don't plan to use the system for extrme gamin..just audio/video/applications etc..but i also expect performance when doing that..so i think an integrated graphics would be better...but now i only see the msi board with the ati chipset being the only one!!!! and heard some negatives about it too...

So..very confused...a little help please!!!!

If you're using a 5 year old P3 I don't think you should be worried about going 939 for upgrades 😉

I agree with your statement of 939 possibly not being compatable down the road. It will be good for a while, but there's no garauntee that something new wont come out in the next couple years that would make the current 939 boards less than ideal for newer processors.

If you're not doing a lot of gaming, go ahead with a sempron/754 system to save some money.

I'm no expert on HTPCs so I'm not going to try to attempt to tell you what tuner to get/what the best output option is.

I'm very happy with my component output to my projector and my AV-710 digital sound, but beyond that I don't know much about HTPC building.

amd 3000 a64(939)
msi rs480
2x512 corsair Value Series
Hitachi 80GB SATA hd

This is the system I have and its absolutely wonderful.

that's what i had in mind at one point but i read some more about msi rs480 and it seems like it's a hit or miss board...but for the price I wouldn't mind exchanging it a couple of times at the store...🙂

You don't have to go Sempron to save money. An A64 3000+ Newcastle (754) is a nice setup (it's what I have). I know folks here aren't big fans of Tigerdirect (I can't blame them...) but for $180 after rebate you can get a Chaintech VNF3-250 and A64 3000+. A decent (2800+ or better) Sempron will run you $90 or more by itself at Newegg. There may be better or similar deals at places other than Tiger, so I'd at least consider that as an option if I were in your shoes.

thanx..but i just read some more article and became kinda scared of 754....its gonna come to an end soon..nooooo

get a pentium processor with 100mhz and 16mb ram. that should tie you down for a while 😉

no really...just get an AMD 64 3000 754 CPU, 1gb RAM, 6600gt, 500watt PSU (with at least 30amps on the 12V rail) and other items to your preference.

Whoa... what's with the PSU recommendation?

How about 18a on the 12V rail? And get a quality PSU from a good company in the range of 350 to 450watts and you should be set.

you have to set a budget, many here consider 1k bang for the buck, many consider 2-3k bang for the buck, ribbon13 considers 30k bang for the buck, just set a general limit.

Don't listen to these fools, as the only one that needs to know your budget is you. I think your answer of best bang/buck should have been enough, but some people here get stuck on a system price and wouldn't know what to build without knowing EXACTLY how much you have to spend. But anyways, I agree with wakawaka...the best bang/buck on 939 right now is the MSI board with ATI chipset and integrated graphics.

look at your system and tell me you'd be happy with "just" a 4k budget. anyway, there's a deal for pata seagates. $50 for 160gig hdd.(120-70mir) you could get 3 fro $150(after mir) so you could have 2 in raid0 for non critical files and all critical files can be put on the 3rd drive.

everything else seems good.

If your worried about getting a bad one, or if your not comfortable building your own rig, then you might want to let Monarch build one for you. They have a system with that MSI board available in a complete or barebones package. The only thing I didn't like was the SFF chassis, but thats just my opinion.

thanx for the suggestions guys..
since i will mainly use the sytem not for gamin but mostly for internet, music, watchin videos, burnin dvds and this kinda stuff ...i figured a Sempron would do the job...the new 90nm ones. I was lookin at either 2600+ (1.6ghz and 128 L2 ) or 2800+ (1.6ghz and 256 L2 cache). Also if i get this...i'll use cheaper 754 mobos and save some money there too...saw some really good deals on the nf3-250 based ones...
...so more researching for me....Google here I come. 🙂

dfi is kinda high-end nf3-250 board...im lookin for something cheaper ...tryin to cut the costs as much as i can.. im not lookin into overclockin it.
would've been nice if it had integrated graphics too..man I'm cheap!!! 🙂

Sempron 2800+ it is. Here's why: it's the cheapest (well not exactly) processor for 754 which is cheaper than 939
