Bad Democrats! Bad! Shame on them!

I believe it'd take 75% of the states ratifying it and that's after a minimum of both 2/3's of both the house and senate accept it.
I think its fair to say that as a new president you start with small tasks that are manageable and scale up, rather than reverse.

Tilting at that windmill obviously would have been better. The introduction of this bill is a symbolic gesture intended to inspire debate & hopefully to advance the only practical solution, which is the interstate popular vote compact.

Democracies will eventually become destabilized by the majority voting themselves free stuff.

You don't see that 'voting themselves free stuff' can happen even if you give the power to the minority that you prefer (rich white guys)?

But at least you share my fear that democracy and capitalism may not be compatible. We just disagree over which needs to go if that's the case.

In TH's world, every governmental body from the local sewer district on up is bankrupt because the representatives were elected by a majority of voters. Same with corporations where the boards were elected by the majority shareholders. Wherever you find majority rule, people lose all self control and vote themselves into bankruptcy. Tyranny is our only hope.

Luckily there’s a natural way to get to that tyranny that the founding fathers approved of. We go back to only land owners being able to vote.

Then all those blue collar factory workers who were laid off and lost their homes that @Texashiker knows, can also lose their right to vote as God intended.

Maybe we can change the Electoral College to give it’s votes by proportion, to the largest land owners in the country.

Let’s face it some poor schmuck living in Texas on a $10K piece of land in a $10k double wide doesn’t really deserve to vote either.

I'm against any proposal which maintains the disproportionate voting power of people who live in smaller states. They already get it by way of representation in the Senate. That is enough.

I'm OK with that. I might agree with it on a strictly representational standpoint. In practice we do see resources and political attention being directed where the important votes are rather than where the need is. This is one way to affect that.

GOP policies appeal to more people than democrat policies; especially as democrats move further to the left with their socialist / communist ideology.

What GOP policies appeal to more people than democrats?

Family values

Religion

Firearm rights

Law and order

Abortion

Divorce

For example, most of the Hispanics I work with are GOD fearing people who value family. Most of them vote democrat because they believe the GOP are for the rich. If people would look at GOP polices, they would find we have more in common than different.

Difference between the democrats and the GOP:

GOP morals and values are not for sale.

Democrats have no limits they will stop to to gain voters. Honest truth is a lot of democrat party leaders are hypocrites. They claim they want open borders, yet build a wall around their home - like president obama. Raise taxes to pay for social programs, then protest when taxes are raised on them - Seattle tax on Amazon.

The one thing that keeps generations of people voting democrat is... welfare.

Aren't you contradicting yourself here? On one hand you state that GOP policies appeal to more people, on the other hand you're afraid of letting all the liberals on East/West coasts dictate national policy. If GOP policies appealed to the majority of people, they would be supported by the majority of people, and yet that does not seem to be the case...

He's referring to real Americans. Coastal elites don't count (except when paying into the Treasury to prop up Jesusland).

Or when they are paying taxes to support a red state or when they are paying more property taxes to off set the large tax cuts.

Take a drive through the heartland sometime, or a week driving through the southern states. Stop at the small diners and talk to people. While you are there look through the phone book at how many churches are listed.

The democrat propaganda machine has done an excellent job of keeping minorities from voting GOP. Even though hispanics, blacks... etc, value family, religion.... there is a stigma the GOP is for old rich white people.

The democrat party dumped their core groups decades ago, which was blue collar workers. I am a blue collar worker who builds equipment for use in the oilfield. All this stuff about Democrats and unions is a bunch of BS. I have belonged to two different unions, and both times the workers were disposable. The unions and companies are in together. When it came time for a contract, the company and the union leaders sat down, worked out a contract, then the contract was presented to the workers. The workers had almost no input into the contract agreements.

Yet, to listen to the unions workers "need" them

The honest truth is, democrats are nothing more than a propaganda machine for the uneducated. I worked with yellow dog democrats - some of the were great welders. They had a firm belief the GOP was only for rich people. Bless their hearts, but they just did not understand economics or what it took to run a business.

That is enough for now, I am tired of typing.

Sounds like your union needs more democracy.

He sounds like a guy who doesn't go to union meetings. He probably forgot to mention that his former union gigs paid a lot better than what he's doing today.

The GOP obviously isn't just for old rich white people. They're the only people who actually benefit financially from it, however. The heartland people he references just find it emotionally satisfying in a way that makes 'em crazy at the same time.

I should be amazed at how many people think this is a good idea, but I'm really not. The fact that they dont understand why its there is the first place, or comparing a national election to a city election tells me all I need to know. Our forefathers were so fearful of what could happen, they implemented this. And Trump is going to rip up the Constitution? Change the rules when he loses? Nope, thats Dems. Like usual, being hypocrites.

Wait for Texas to turn blue, which is looking to be quite soon, and watch all the self-serving conservatives completely change their tune.

By all means explain why you think the electoral college was created and why you think comparing the election of the country’s chief executive to a city or state’s chief executive is wrong.

Don’t be coy! Just come out and make your case.

Our forefathers were so fearful of what could happen, they implemented this. And Trump is going to rip up the Constitution? Change the rules when he loses? Nope, thats Dems. Like usual, being hypocrites.

Ironically, one of the primary reasons listed was to prevent the elevation of a demagogue to the presidency, something that manifestly failed, haha.

I’m also confused as to exactly what hypocrisy you see here. The rules resulted in the election of a corrupt incompetent. That indicates they aren’t working well so we should fix them. Seems like common sense, no?

So in other words you’re similtaneously arguing that the GOP appeals to more people but the Democrats have sneakily tricked more people into voting for them therefore we need to reject the will of the majority of voters and install your preferred candidates.

Why even bother with voting then?

Sweet jeebus you're a tribal clown. Trump supporters kvetching about hypocrisy is a hoot, but you choosing to keep your head buried in the sand is just, ugh. Yeah, get sanctimonious about supporting a traitor and a party that cheats its way to power, I'm sure it will start convincing people any day now.

Yes, the hypocrisy is pretty hilarious. Good thing republicans don't want to change the constitution too right? You're on the side of the pathological liars, sad it doesn't cause you to re-evaluate your positions.

Remember this little gem? "The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy." - Donald Trump

You’ll notice he makes exactly zero arguments for the electoral college on the merits, it’s all just vague hand waving about how the founders wanted it this way and how Democrats suck.

This is because there is no argument for the electoral college on the merits. It’s all based around tradition or an argument that they don’t want a few areas deciding the presidency (apparently not noticing that as it is a few areas decide the presidency)

This sentence perfectly encapsulates why few here take you seriously on politics, TH. You don't think GOP policies and behavior have anything to do with it? Wow.

It's simply amazing what people like you and Ackmed will do to absolve the GOP of any and all accountability, pretty much no matter the issue.

I covered that earlier in the thread. But you don't actually read threads, right? You just pop in to take a quick dump, own the Libs & Praise our Dear Leader, right?

Whether there's any truth in any of that or not, none of it really relates to the topic or justifies the electoral college system. You haven't shown that the two issues are in any way related.

I agree. The EC made sense 100+ years ago before the invention of instant communication. Instead of taking months to certify election results, it can now be done in hours...or a few days for things that have to be counted by hand. No longer should we be appointing people to take the vote of the people, then cast their votes to actually elect the President.
I think you misunderstand the purpose of the electoral college.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of the electoral college.

I think you do too.

It’s an antiquated necessity from hundreds of years ago. Just like assigning someone to travel to Washington by foot or horse at the end of winter to cast a vote is a silly idea. There is no modern reason to travel by horse to Washington unless it’s a vacation or some kind of lifetime goal.
