<< udonoogen is right, verizon and att (i think verizon has better signal tho) are pretty good here in berkeley and around the bay, i can't get any damn reception from cingular (i hear they use att's networks up here). udonoogen, where are you staying at? i'm in unit2. >>

i was in unit 1 last year. living in a house on northside this year. i know some people in unit 2.

i dont think they use att's networks. their own networks just suck. i called and asked whats up ... they have a lot of plans to put up a bunch of towers around here ... but i heard from other friends that theyre having a lot of trouble getting all that stuff approved. could take a few more months. until then its all system busys and dropped calls ... stay away from cingular if you are in the bay area!

Cingular DOES NOT use ATT's network. Cingular uses the GSM network while ATT uses the TDMA. Verizon uses the CDMA network, so they're all under different band/networks. I live in the same house as Udonoooogen and I get great reception with my new ATT service + Motorola v60t phone (Awesome phone). I also get reception around campus and other places where Cingular never had coverage. Now, I actually have to worry about turning off my phone when I go to class. With cingular, there wasn't any reception, so it didn't matter if I had my phone on or off.

Udonooogen: go to bed or else I won't fix up your computer.....

Biglaw11,

It depends on where you are located. Cingular, previously known as BellSouth Mobility uses 800 analog, 800 TDMA, and 1900 TDMA, and I have been told in my area that they share towers with AT&T.

If anyone was wondering about AT&T in the Sacramento area, it is great. Also, someone said that they have mobile to mobile minutes for life, and I don't believe that that is true. That promotion is only good for one year:frown:.

i dont know about what att does ... but after your one or two year contract runs up with cingular ... they keep you on a month to month basis on your contract. so it could be for life

I don't think you need a 2yr contract for 50% more anytime, but I'll double check when I get to work. As far as contract go, if you want anything for free, you'll need to agree to atleast a 1yr. btw, if you need a phone now's the time. AT&T is giving away a nokia 5165 for free, you wont have to deal with any rebates either. Cingular + AT&T = joint effort in western US to build next gen network, I think you'll see alot more "joint efforts" in the future. Last thing, if you don't know what to do with your stock portolio AT&T wireless is trading at a really low rate....personally I think wireless is going to be with us for a very long time.

Edit: you do need a 2yr contract:( but I have good news too, you can still get free LD, you just have to ask for it. They'll give it to you.
