point is...theres no such thing as a laptop webcam..if you wanted to...you COULD plug it into your laptop and use it....

Well that's not true. There are webcams that marketed specifically for laptops. But the point was that a webcam is a webcam. It's not that they are "windows exclusive", it's because they don't make drivers for Mac. But for some reason he takes that as Mac being more compatible.

Mac's work great for cameras when they are made for Mac. Windows works great for just about every camera. That's the difference. both of them are good, but PC is definitely more compatible just from the sheer number of drivers out there.

Linus is trying to point out there is no such thing as windows-only webcam, and therefore, macs are NOT more compatible..

He's not bright enough to figure that out. He's got some elitiest attitude but he doesn't have a clue WTF he's talking about.

It's not a "desktop" webcam, it's just a freaking WEBCAM! It has either a USB or Firewire cord. What it is plugged into doesn't matter! As long as it has drivers, it'll work.

the large base on the bottom of my webcam says otherwise. seeing how it doesn't have clamps on the bottom to grapple the edge of the lid of the laptop, it's not a laptop webcam.

like i said before, when it comes to digital cameras, camcorders, etc, macs are the way to go. even the importing/editing software is better.

I'm trying to figure out why they say this

"Like its previous model, the Webcam Go Plus, Creative's PC-Cam 300 is both a webcam and a portable digital camera."

Portable? How heavy is that desktop of yours?

I think most intelligent people who wanted to use it with a laptop would sit it on the table next to the laptop. But what do I know - I could be wrong.

In the end, I think the point is that Apple just doesn't have the driver / compatability base that PC's have. You search for Cameras that DON'T work for Mac, and then Cameras that DON'T work for PC. I think you'll find that FAR more work with Windows than Mac.

As far as your camera problem with windows, that's a single individual problem. I connect my MiniDV and 7.2MP camera to my computer all the time and never have any problems.

it's basically a portable webcam moreso than a digital camera. google images of it so you can see what it looks like.

i don't understand what the weight of my desktop has anything to do with the portability of the webcam.

again, i'd like to remind you that apple computers are capable of running mac and windows os. so, this debate is pointless.... just buy a mac and you'll be fine regardless of whatever you choose.

Why would I spend several thousand dollars to run windows on a mac? That's the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. I can build a PC that's better than a Mac machine for signifigantly less.

Not to mention that Windows runs slower on bootcamp than on a traditional PC.

BUT, they're also littered with half-truths, so they're to be taken with a grain of salt. I think it's interesting that in one of the commercials, Microsoft is critisized for not bundling certain software with the OS. Of course, when they DO decide to do that, they get their asses sued.

Which way do we want it, people?

Very true. Microsoft gets screwed either way. Damned if they do, damned i they dont.

Odd....guess downloading constant driver updates for the selected hardware/periphs that a Mac will operate with is something Mac owners just love.

the updates are almost always security updates. every once in a while, there will be program updates (ipod, ilife, etc.).

i don't know exactly how it does it, but if i plug in any random digital camera in my powerbook, the powerbook knows what camera it is and works with it. same with mp3 players. same with external drives. yadda x3.

all i know is that it's way easier than dealing with the new hardware wizard and seeing "cannot install drivers" or whatever... even when it tries connecting to the internet to get you the drivers. frigging aggrivating.

bottom line = macs are for functional minimalists who like style.

Huh? I agree with the style part (hey, they're cool! 🙂), but I'm not sure what you mean by "functional minimalists". My Mac does everything but gaming. I've found direct replacements or substitutes for 99% of the software I use on a PC. OS X is basically UNIX with a spiffy GUI, so there's plenty of options to turn it into a server, workstation, etc.

I think one of the smartest things that Apple could do would be to throw Microsoft Office in with the basic OS X installation and sell the Intel Mini for $499. I bet 95% of the people out there use their computers as word processors and to surf the Internet/check their email; if they included Office, which the rest of the world runs on, they'd really be in business! I think that jumping up the price of their entry-level mac to $600 was a mistake because $600 is not perceived as "cheap" for a computer anymore, especially for one that doesn't come with a keyboard, mouse, speakers, or a monitor.

Also, I think they should start selling lower-priced monitors at their stores. Imagine you're a switcher and walk into the store and go "Cool! A tiny, powerful computer for $599! Now I just need to pick up a nice monitor...oh, wait, the cheapest you have is a $799 20" widescreen?" All of a sudden you have a $1500 computer after you add in the keyboard, mouse, and speakers. Bummer. Apple should make themselves the one-stop shop for basic computer needs, so that people can walk in, buy a complete system for a decent price, and walk out ready to rock and roll. Oh well.

I was in a Apple store yesterday (made me feel dirty) and had to laugh at one of the employees I heard telling a potential customer how much Dell's suck and that they basically break and fall apart as soon as you get it home, now if that isn't slander then I don't know what is.

functional minimalist = someone who doesn't like to deal with extra steps, extra parts, unnecessary pieces, etc. for example, a money clip vs a wallet.... thinner/smaller/less attachments, yet can do the same stuff = better.

Ahhh that makes more sense 🙂 I think that XP is to the point where it runs nearly as stable as OS X; it just requires a bit more work to maintain. My wife's Intel iMac hasn't crashed once (the OS, not the apps) since I got it for her last February. My XP computer rarely crashes; as long as I do my maintenance every week (adaware, spybot, avg, windows update, disk cleanup, disk defrag), it runs perfectly most of the time. I can see what you mean about 'functional minimalist' now. I'm working on switching my family over to OS X to reduce my tech support calls lol 😉

i like apple overall, but this is stupid:
114,000 viruses? Not on a Mac.
true there are more viruses for pc's then for mac's, but mac's have viruses too. however, i love my ipod, and i am so jealous of my friends iMac. it's so fvcking cool!
and yet, the commercials are stupid.

Exactly, I said that in the other thread about this.

You know its an attack on windows. You know microsoft can very well release the whole ilife type products and bundle it but the minute they do that, everyone company in the world cries anti-trust.

i hate sales reps. best buy, apple store, car dealerships, whatever, they're all the same, they see the customer as potential commissions, nothing more

You could get a tiny internet PC from dell for $250.
You're right that $600 is no longer cheap.
For $650 you can get a 3GHz dual core Pentium D, 1GB ram, ati x600 graphics, and a 2007fpw 20" widescreen ultrasharp LCD from dell. It'll spank the mac mini forwards and backwards. Only thing it won't have that the mac mini has is that it won't "look savvy". But then again, appearance is everything in today's fashion-saavy, corporate america.

They're probably using the same reasoning that allowed them to make the same compatibility statements in the 'switch' ads. Apple releases a new OS every year, so they can bundle newer drivers than XP includes on the CD. New devices have their drivers added to the windows update database, but don't get added to the XP cd images as the years go by. The total number of devices that work under windows is definitely much higher. Several years ago, I checked the win2k compatibility list and there were >30,000 devices.

ha. my shuttle looks damn good, has a small footprint, cost less than a mac, and probably still has more power. it is about as minimalist as you can get. a pci slot, agp slot, a dvd burner, and a 7 in 1 media card reader (which i wish i could get rid of).

IMHO, 90% of mac sales are from 20-something sheeple that are trying to stick it to "evil corporate america" because someone told them windows is taking over the world. i also wonder how many mac users own a VW jetta. oh well, to each his own.

I have both a 2nd generation Shuttle XPC and a Power 4 based Mac Mini at home, and the Mac Mini:

1) It's 1/4 the size of the Shuttle.
2) It's almost silent during operation. You can only really hear the Mini when it's accessing a CD. Compare that to my XPC, which sounds like an industrial air conditioner whenever I do anything CPU intensive.
3) Goes in and out of sleep mode in under 5 seconds. The XPC takes about 20, and the fan still continues to run and make noise when it's "sleeping".

OMG I hate these commercials. They are PROPAGANDA, not advertising. Anyone who knows anything about security knows that macs aren't secure or safe in any way. They are LESS POPULAR. Why would you target a platform that only 2% of the population uses when you can target 98% of the population with a PC crack. The only reason windows shows more holes is because people are looking harder. Just the other day there was an article on slashdot regarding a huger number of security gaps in mac's. DON'T BE SHEEP! Everyone has to watch out for malicious software, I do, and I am on a linux box. Come on people, use your brains. Macintoshes are no safer, they just make you feel safe. Alright rant concluded....

has anyone seen the comic that "says what the mac commercials won't"

its one of those online comics
based on the commercial where they hit on windows for having viruses..and then after the mac guy talks about not having viruses the windows guy goes "wow you can't even get negative attention that must be rough"

and the mac guy says "yea i cry myself to sleep alot"

i thought it was funny if any1 else has seen this post a link to it for the rest of us to enjoy(since it'll make sense unlike my babbeling)

Edit: i believe it was from the comic Ctrl+Alt+Delete
