surely there'll be updates to the Pro now before Xmas. they can't leave the 13" MBP in its current state...

You mean, you don't understand the point of the 13" Macbook Pro?

So the best I have comes from theories developed as a result of college education in marketing/business/advertising. Breaking mental barriers is a big deal to manufacturers and consumers. Having something *under* $1000 feels better to consumers, and so they are more likely to buy it for their students. I mean, I don't think my first car cost $1000 even, there's no way my mother would have purchased me a $1000 computer.

WRT to the mouse:

System Requirements

* Bluetooth-enabled Mac computer
* Mac OS X v10.5.8

10.5.8 is plain Leopard right? Maybe I can use this with my Dell Mini 10v w/BT. I haven't put Snow Leopard on it.

Yes, 10.5.8 = Leopard.

Will the Magic Mouse ever be supported under Boot Camp? hmmmm.

Yeah, that's regular Leopard, not Snow Leopard.

P.S. I only got that mouse cuz it was free. I really hate Apple's BT implementation. I find it unreliable for autodetect after the batteries die or whatever. Sometimes after replacing batteries I have to reboot to get the mouse recognized.

I also went with the wired keyboard, but there it's also because of the two USB 2 ports and the numeric keypad.

From that perspective, yeah! 😀 I appreciate the Firewire port on the 13" immensely, and the SD card reader as well, I just don't undestand why they don't drop the 13" plastic laptop, either off the product or down to $800 or something.

Yeah, and it also makes them look more viable & competitive to the PC industry. But I think they should drop it and make the basic metal 13" Pro the $999 model 😀

It's a fair price, any lower and it would cannibalize 13" MBP sales? Isn't the new unibody plastic a misnomer? I can't imagine they actually start with a block of plastic, then machine out the base.

The mythical $499 mini/$899ish MacBook remain.. myths. 😉

With the new iMac, are these desktop CPUs now? Or mobile Core 2 Duos still?

I wonder if that magic mouse will ever have Windows drivers? Is support shipping with Boot Camp? I'd buy one this second if I knew for sure that it'd work when I booted Windows on my Macbook and worked on my Windows/SL dual boot.

Erm, learn to read. They couldn't say unibody if it wasn't. It's a more durable design, and the bits that are machined out are probably melted back down and reused.

It's not silly, it's magical 😉

As for the 13" MBPs - they are in need of a serious upgrade now to put them out of reach of the little Macbook that could.

How is this not the deal of the century?

As best I can tell, it's just about a $1999 computer for $1300. It's less than the base unibody 15" without dedicated graphics. Throw in some ram and one of those 2.5" HDs that Newegg had deals on recently and, wow....

I'm tempted. SOOO tempted! If my G4 Powerbook was worth more than a couple hundred bucks I'd upgrade in a second.

If you want deal of the century, you gotta wait for next generation stuf to come out and buy the most recent old generation stuff. Unibodies came out, I bought the previous gen MBP, $2500 MSRP, $1500 on amazon. Love it.

It doesn't have the 7 hour battery however. I am not saying that it isn't a great deal, Tyranicus has that exact model and I used it for about a month and it was great, but the longer life battery is worth a lot to some.

No... it's silly.

And I agree on the 13" MBP. $200 gets you aluminum, an SD card reader, and the firewire port... not worth $200 to me. What I really, really thought they would do is release an 11.6" system, and have that be the MacBook. You want small, light and reasonably powerful? MacBook. You want larger, and more powerful, MacBook Pro.

I also keep hoping that some day they will do colors on their laptops again. I think Product (RED) MacBook would be the bee's knees, the wasp's nipples, the erogonous zone of every major flying insect in the Northern Hemisphere!

Oooohhh...I didn't realize it was the older model. Damn! Knew it was too good to be true!

And RE: Macbook VS. Pro, with educational discounts I guess it's a little better, since you get $50 off the MB, but $150 off the MBP, meaning the difference is "only" $150.

It is pretty cool. One of the first major multitouch devices that's not a touch screen. I'd pick one up for my desktop if there were Windows drivers. However, I have to be cautious given how horrible the Mighty Mouse is.

P.S. I paid the Apple tax and forked over an extra $200 for 8 GB Apple RAM (which now falls under Apple Care too). I am considering cancelling and order with 4 GB and just getting extra RAM myself for $120, but somehow it doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Yeah, sometimes it's worth it just to get the box in & go with no hassles...
Well, I cancelled the order. 😛 Reordered with just 4 GB. I'll get the other 4 GB later.

Yea, you know I am not entirely sure where the MacBook Air fits into the lineup. I understand that it is useful for certain people, but I would personally prefer a system that was the absolutely smallest possible but could still fit a full size chiclet keyboard. Past that, I don't care about what else.

I personally don't know a single person in real life who owns an Air. It's very cool, but even at $1499, it's waaaaay too expensive for what you get.
