Hi Everyone,

I am completely new to the Android community (I was on an iPhone previously) . I bought a Nexus 5 recently and I am loving it so far. I'm noticing though that my RAM usage seems to be a bit high. I'm not sure if this is normal as I am completely knew to Android. Here's what I have running:

Settings - 31bm
Facebook - 47mb
BBM - 69mb
Dropbox - 10mb
Advance Task Killker Free - 4.4mb
com.qualcomm.qcrilms... - 3.2 mb
Google play services - 13mb
Google services - 14mb
Google services - 13mb
Google Keyboard 44mb

Used - 0.92GB
Free - 0.90GB

The phone doesn't seem to be lagging or anything and it runs butter smooth. My brothers HTC one, uses 750mb out of his 2gig. Just wondering why mine is running so high, and if its normal.

Thanks

a) Stop using task killers - it's not 2010 anymore.
b) Is your brother also running a Nexus 5 with the same apps and widgets? If not, you can't compare the two.

Also, 69MB for BBM? Holy smokes, though it looks like that's common for BBM on android.

Yes, it's normal.

Android likes keeping things in memory because it's meant to be used as a multitasking device. You'll enjoy this when your browser tabs don't all have to reload whenever you swap to doing something else for a bit...

Free memory is wasted memory. Don't worry about it. And uninstall the damn task killer. It actually makes things worse now.

Thanks guys. And really, Android doesn't require task killers? I thought this was a must for android devices, guess I'm wrong!

I've been wondering about the task killer apps myself. I bought a new phone over Thanksgiving (Samsung Galaxy Centura for $30 wooo!) and while I had a task killer on my old Android phone, I was questioning the wisdom of having one since apps just reload anyway. Looks like I found an answer haha. Thanks guys.

Looks normal and no you do not need a task killer. There may be some older phones with outdated ROMs that handle memory sub-optimally. The Nexus 5 is the latest hardware that runs on the latest OS.

Having said that, I occasionally use a task killer to kill pesky apps that refuse to close. That's not because of RAM, though.
