Looks like we were all wrong and Nvidia went seriously overboard on their cooling. With idle temps like that why in the world is everyone acting like it is an inferno in there. With proper ventilation ie 2-4 case fans your system should run just fine. And now Asus has come out with their one slot solution which only runs a couple of degrees hotter, seems like the dust is starting to settle in video cards.

Anyone know where the temperature is read from? (Besides on board diode)
When you use a CPU, you can get different readings on different boards, this may not be the case with different 6800 readings (they should be consistant if they are on board), but that doesn't mean the temp reading is accurate, it may be on a cool part of the core, it may be on an average part.

Woul dbe interesting to see a 6800U using one of those heat sensitive cameras.

the article is useless for anything other than comparing temps vs the 2 cards listed, as most everyone will have different ambient/room temps than what was run in the article.

Wow, thats a lot cooler than my 6800 GT, which is idle at 57c, and high 80's load. I know the Ultra has a bigger heatsink, but thats a big difference. As he said, temps drop FAST. He should use used rthdribl and run it in window mode, with the temp section of the drivers open. That way he can get real time temps, before they drop.

The cards seems to be too far apart, when they are basically the same, just rebranded.

Yeah all he'd have to do would have dual monitors with the secondary monitor having the temp reading

Still if Nvidia had went with a one slot solution i would be willing to bet that it would have temps around the ATI cards right now. If ATI had went for a 2 slot solution then it would probably have temps like Nvidias now. This could turn the tables a bit in favour of a 2 slot solution.

What are you talking about? The 6800 temps are higher than the X800 temps. In my expierence, and in posts from other users.

Oh they are huh? I would definately like to see some proof there. Everyone else with an X800 card in this forum that i have seen has load temps anywhere from 70-85C.

But the 6800 is a ton faster than the X800. You give a little, you take a little.

i dunno why everyone keeps arguing this... the temps in at's article means nothing as they hardly reflect the conditions in which the "forum" people run their cards..

Not hardly. THe 6800GT is a little faster than the Pro, and the XT/PE is a little faster than the Ultra. Generally of course. Neither card is "a ton faster" than the other overall.

Cant offer any "proof" because for some reason, I havent seen any hardware site do a test on temps. The only one Ive seen was guru3d, and their test was very flawed.

What I can do, is link you to people who posted their temps.

6800GT overclocks and temps

Another with temps

Yet another

And.. another

XT/PE temp

X800 Pro temps

Another

Im sure you can search more forums and find more yourself. Reading over the threads, most peoples 6800GT's are mid 80's load, and the X800 Pro's are mid 70's load, usually less.

My 6800GT temps are 57c Idle and 86c Load My X800 Pro (which I dont have anymore) was 38c idle, and 66c load.

Temps should REALLY be included in reviews, I have no idea why its not. All it takes is just looking at the driver temp settings. The only problem is that they usually just have the hardware in the open on a bench. But as long as they are both setup the same way, the temps would be valid.

Your temps are ass backwards. The x800 runs hotter than the 6800...make sure you get your information in the right order. Since the 9800 line, Radeons have gotten increasingly hot, and since the x800 is just a revamped 9800, it would stand to reason they're heavily pushing the envelope.

I've run both cards side by side on identical systems, running the same 3D app, and the ATi is on AVERAGE 20C hotter.

My temps are not backwards. How do you explain the screen shot showing the 6800GT hitting 86c? All the posts by other 6800GT owners hitting mid 80's is backwards too? It seems to me you need to open your eyes, and stop accusing people of being ignorant.
