New Amazon Device, June 18th

Rumors say it's a phone with eye-tracking sensors to enable a 3D display. I'm not a fan of the Amazon appstore ecosystem, but I am curious.

It's a phone.

Not excited at all. Might be good value for the hardware, but it will be locked down Amazon BS OS.

The real announcement is who they partner with:

-Selling it without a contract? Won't make a dent domestically.

-Selling it only with T-Mobile or Sprint? Experiment that will disappear in a year.

-Selling it on AT&T, Verizon or both? Might make some waves then....

How about no contract MVNO?

Curious to see what it is but I'm guessing the people in the promo commercial from it are much more easily amazed than someone familiar with the industry/hardware.

It'll probably be neat, but I doubt it'll really be anything particularly unique.

To be fair, if they sell it without a contract at a reasonable price, they could definitely make a dent. Think about how many people have a Kindle, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, HDX, Fire TV, etc... There are a lot of people this would cater to surprisingly. I bet if my father-in-law didn't have to get a new phone (he lost his), he would more than likely have purchased whatever Amazon releases.

However, I'm betting they team up with AT&T. AT&T has been the most receptive partner to everyone for the most part. Verizon usually gets the phones with wireless charging, but AT&T gets nearly everything else. Galaxy Note 1, Lumia 1520, Asus Padfone, 1st iPhone, etc..

Edit: I just had a crazy thought... What if they end up pairing with AT&T and releasing this device as a standalone phone. It would be like buying the HDX paired with AT&T, but it would be a completely singular cell service. Amazon + Prime = Cellular Service for an extra $10 a month..... I don't know exactly, but it could be huge if they go somewhat this route.

Same as T-Mobile, unless Amazon is setting one up then that is huge news.

The market has shown that either you are on AT&T or Verizon, or you simply don't matter in America.

I would bet too. It might just be another HTC First, or as you say they might cut some deal where if you are a Prime Member or something you can get discounted service.

If its a cheap unlocked smartphone that can be rooted and flashed, then this could be an interesting piece of hardware.

the only thing that would make this interesting would be data pricing, and thats something amazon cant really control. 3d has already been tried and it was an immediate flop even though it was sort of cool to look at. im sure this phone will sell ok but theres nothing there for ATers

You do if the 3D moves with you which is what is rumored. I despise 3D but Amazon hasn't released a horrible device yet so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
The kindle fire software was unoptimized buggy turd. I don't have higher hopes for this.

You don't the 3d top track with you and even then it's only going to go in one dimension. No 2d parallax planes it would be like the 3ds or Evo 3d imo

i will be damned if it comes only with 16gb and no expansion slot.
seriously. i cant stand cloud/streaming. im always out in the middle of nowhere where coverage is spotty.

Well given that amazon is all about the cloud and streaming, this probably isn't going to be the device for you.

this isnt going to be the device for anybody unless they find a way to charge less for data, they at least need nearly unlimited amazon prime

Are Google services allowed on the Fire OS or is it too locked down? The only thing that makes me lean towards an Amazon device is access to Prime video streaming, which is kind of meh anyways.

Nothing Google on a Amazon device. Unless you root it, and even that's much more of a pain in the butt than most other devices.

which pretty much makes it irrelevant to most of the market who have and use apps daily that you can't get on their amazon store.
