Israel is the thorn in the side of the Middle East which promotes the terrorism that our ruling elite uses as a pretext to their conquest of the region. It is pretty much the same as it was when Jews were used by the Church back in the Middle Ages, taking all the heat for being money lenders while the Pope and crew rake in vast majority of the profits. It's more a case of Israel simply doing as it damn well pleases, partly because it knows the west HAS to back it up no matter what they do.

To start out with, Obama would be hard pressed to be as pro Israeli as GWB and will never satisfy Al-Quida.

But the acid tests for supporting Israel is in the UN and lies in the future. Meanwhile Obama has more domestic and international problems than three average US Presidents combined. So I can understand why Obama is not overly eager to take on the pro Israeli lobby in the USA at this time.

But given his Cairo speech which gained him quite a bit of Islamic good will, sooner or later, Obama is going to have to take some defining actions, and then he either pisses off Islamic leaders or Israeli leaders. And Obama cannot straddle the fence forever is simply my take on the matter. My guess is, and from the perspective of both camps, if Obama is smart, he will give with one hand and take with the other, giving each side a carrot and a stick.

Since the defining point is not yet here, this thread could be premature. But when it comes to speculation, its an anand tech tradition to take the bait and run.

What springs to mind is convene a kind of international revival of the Annapolis conference without
a political position of the USA. And turn the question over to world consensus where Israeli support is no where what it is in the USA. And then the USA can ride to the partial rescue of Israel while still forcing Israel into major concessions that can break the log jam in terms of a viable mid-east peace.

Al Queda uses the Palestinians for propaganda, trying to wrap themselves in the banner of their cause. The Palestinians deserve better advocates.

It's pretty crazy that Al Queda gains so much of a platform for their statements for their violence - but it's partly our own fault for our ignoring the more legitimate voices.

How often do we see any Palestinian leaders expressing views? Al Jazeera is prevented from gaining a foothold, unavailable for years on US cable networks.

The Palestinians are just lucky there are enough people who aren't biased for Israel that they care.
