New addition to our home

So my wife decided she just had to get a dog.

She has been intending to get a puppy for about 6 months now, and had been researching breeds and breeders to select the dog she wanted. Well she finally settled on the breed (a havanese) and had pretty much picked out the breeder when she found an listing on Craigslist for someone looking to "re-home" their five year old dog. She went for a visit last Thursday and loves the dog, so I spent the weekend fencing the back yard and she picks up the dog today.

I have never had, or wanted a dog and have made it clear to my wife that the fencing was the end of my commitment to looking after the thing.

I know things will change around the house, such as it will be harder to just decide to take a trip for the weekend and holiday planning will be a pain (there goes our trip to Vegas in June).

My only hope is that I can hide my resentment for the dog so it doesn't just turn around and bite me.

Well, you have a point. But unless the OP is some douchebag who ends up beating whatever dog they get, it will still have a better life than rotting in a cage somewhere.

Why the hostility? If you love dogs then this really is a valid question. If even one person reading these threads is motivated to go get a dog from the shelter when they decide to get a dog then some good has been done.

I'm not sure if any of the comments in this thread are like this, but some people try to make people feel bad for getting a dog from a breeder and not a shelter, and other people get sick of this kind of treatment. It would be very similar to saying to couple who just had a child of their own, "Why didn't she choose one of the millions of abandoned children in various orphanages that need a home?"

Edit: In other words if his wife wanted a specific, pure-bred dog, then there's nothing wrong with going to a breeder. It's not his wife's fault that there are "millions of dogs in various shelters that need a home," and she shouldn't feel guilty about her decision.

What's the difference here exactly? Did you misread the OP and think that they bought a dog from a breeder? That's not the case (seemingly)... it was from a current owner looking to give up the dog. Which is how shelters get dogs for the most part.

Regardless of whether you have any involvement with the dog, please remember that the dog has been displaced from a home it has known for years and is in unfamiliar and new surroundings. I understand that this is your wife's dog and not something you want dealings with, but don't give it the impression that you don't want it around.
