What brand did you have?

I'm curious, I take it you're not Asian? Never heard of anyone Asian going through an entire bottle of kimchee as an adult. Kind of thing that only children would do. :D

In the old days, kimchee would be made in these big old ceramic pots. They'd toss in cabbage, peppers, water, dried fish, and other herbs and spices, then bury it a foot or so underground for about a year. It was said that when someone opened up a recently unearthed pot of kimchee, you could smell it across the entire village.

Bon appetit,

The aroma of a good Thai restaurant is NOTHING like kimchi. That aroma permeates a large area, and it's as good a good reason as I can think of to be somewhere else.

Remember, I said it was JMHO. I'm convinced everyone smells and tastes things differently. Otherwise everyone would agree on what they liked and disliked.

I voted in this thread and started this thread :) :)

anyway, I forgot what brand it is (I had bad ones before but usually I am pretty lucky in picking a good one, so I didn't care what brand I purchased)

and yes, I am childish. :)

Actually, let me rephrase that...

It's not childish per se, it's a discovery thing.

We all discover things that supremely interest us during life and often end up immersing ourselves into these things during the early stages of acquaintence. Since you're Asian, I would have expected that you had run into kimchee earlier and had your addiction back then, as it's not an esoteric dish.

Of course, our taste buds change. Some foods we abhor as children, later we adore as adults; and vice-versa. :)

I noticed that King's kimchee has switched bottles and labels, trying to look more upscale. My favorite is no longer available, Harry Kim's kimchee, used to love that stuff back in the 1970s. Not to be confused with Ensign Harry Kim from Star Trek, Voyager.

If you're anywhere near the SF Bay Area, there's a restaruant named San Tung in San Francisco that makes really darn good kimchee and amazing dry-braised chicken wings. They go great with beer!:thumbsup:

Bon appetit,

You will feel the burn, then people will gradually back off from you because your breath reeks.

It's awesome stuff, though.

My mom makes great kimchi (she learned from a Korean neighbor before I was born). My mom's is less salty and hotter than what I get from other other places and jars.

In high school I use to eat kimchi sandwiches. White bread, Miracle Whip, American cheese, and lots of kimchi. My mouth is watering just thinking of it.

I've not had mom's kimchi for years. I gotta ask her to makes some at Thanksgiving.
