I've narrowed my choices down to 4 cpu's based on my budget of +/_ $150.00. Here's what I'm looking at:
AMD Athlon 64/939
3200+ Venice
3500+ Venice
Opteron/939
144 Venus
146 Venus
I know there's a bit of a difference in price there but that seems to be the range of speed and price for me. So here's my question, what's the difference between the opty's and the regular SC/64 Athlons? I know there is a on board cache difference but which one would be the fastest for gaming? Both have 1k FSB and similar MHZ speeds. I know there's been a lot of talk about the Opterons 144's. Is the extra onboard cache the reason for people coveting them? Thanks for your help.

the reasons of raging Opterons are:

-1Mb cache for all of them.

-3 HT links instead of 1.

-Less power is needed: ~1.35 Which means less heat production = better overclocking abilities.

-Better quality. Opterons are made in a different production line, which has higher standars.

Thats the ones I know. if there are any others.. someone will tell XD

Skip regular Venice, get 144 Opty will be my bet. Saw a guy run it at 1.4v/2.7Ghz. It will get you a FX57++ machine easily. Get 146 if you want safty on a high OCing. The lower Mhz on Opteron you can make up easily with Ocing. Like my Sempron 64 came at 1.6, Oced to 2.4 easily without even upping voltage.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll try to get a 144 or 146 then. I know the retail price has been creeping up on them lately, much to the dissapointment of most here. Getting my new mobo in a few days so I hope I can find one in short order. Thanks again.
