I show everything on one page. I couldn't open that thread because it would time out.

The definition(s) of "Theory"

the·o·ry ( P ) Pronunciation Key (th-r, thîr)
n. pl. the·o·ries
1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

2. The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice: a fine musician who had never studied theory.

3. A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.

4. Abstract reasoning; speculation: a decision based on experience rather than theory.

5. A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment: staked out the house on the theory that criminals usually return to the scene of the crime.

6. An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture.

Observing definitions of 4, 6 should be enough to explain what I meant when I said "Theory." 0.9999... remains a "theory" because we could never reach the end of the sequence because it's neverending. Therefore it becomes an "assumption based on limited information or knowledge" (def 6). But since it's repeated, we use the definition defined by (def 4). Now since we have the absolute value "1" which isn't a "theory" but an absolute number and if we compare the two.... you are basically comparing a "theory" to an "number". (ie Apples and Oranges)

Also I wanted to point out that "Theory" although meaning that something have been tested rigorously, still is basically still an "assumption" because there might be a way that we did not see which disproves the "theory". In essense 0.9999... != 1.

This is my comment from this thread in FI (which is now locked)
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=42&threadid=1286264

I personally think that the Mods need a better way to handle this kind of thing. It has been proven in two threads now that all one needs to do to kill a thread is to bomb it with a bunch of posts. If there was a large thread I wanted to die (movie trivia, ATOT goodnight, 1=0.9999..., etc) all I would have to do is go to the public library and spam it with a fake account. I think this is unacceptable. dxkj knew what he was doing and that he would probably get a vacation. ATOTgeek saw the results and knew he could get away with it anonymously, i.e. with no consequences.

If I was being rash I would equate it to thread terrorism. ;)

The Canucks w00t thread ISN'T a nef thread. It's got a theme, and it continues on topic.

The old .9r = 1 thread was a nef thread by the end as people posted there just "to keep it going man!!!"

kill this stupid thread! My god, its a cognitive problem more than it is mathematical...

why can't you guys get it straight... yet you persist to use false, ill-formed logic to explain something logically. :disgust:

I say they are not equal .9999... would be a floating point number and 1 is an integer. For them to be equal 1 should be writen as 1.0

I posted numerous times proofs showing that you can do a long division on 1/1 to get 0.999...

What definition is that? Know what you're talking about before you post :p
