New 7600GS card crashes PC in games.....

I have a somewhat elderly system with agpx8.

Sp I found a 7600GS card with agpx8 to upgrade my graphics, so I could play some Supreme commander and some NWN 2 perhaps. I once bought those games but didnt have the hardware for them.

Anyway the card installed fine, but in both games, the computer suddenly crashes and reboots!

I checked the Nvidia GPU temp it never got above 56. And I don't get any warning signs before the crash.

I have tried the drivers from the included CD, from Nvidia and from Inno3d (the manufacturer)

Someone tipped me that maybe I lacked Watt. My PSU is an enermax 350 wat unit. An onlien calculator estimated my wat need to 250. SO I dont think its the PSUs fault.

Apart from that I don't have any clue what the problem is.

Here is my system:

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, nForce2

AMD Athlon Barton XP 2500+/333, Sokkel A

2xWD Raptor 360GD, 36,7GB, SATA, 10K in a raid. But those arent comfigured in my new xp installation. I think one of them is getting bad, so gonna hook them up independantly.

Maxtor +9, 160GB, Fluid, ATA133, 8MB the system drive with all my games and so forth.

Coolermaster TAC-T01 & Q Alloy Tastatur

Asus A9600XT/TVD/128M, Radeon 9600XT 1
that card is now replaced by 7600GS

2x Corsair Value DDR400, 512MB 1 GB total

Coolermaster Cooler, HHC-L61, Sokkel A

Enermax 350W PSU

Bios Revision number eeeehh, no clue, is it shown at startup?

Windows XP

the bios revision does show up at post, but you can go into the bios to find it out.

1. I would recommend a 500 watt psu, been a rash of systems getting video card upgrades and the psu is not sufficient.

2. it my be a combination of things but will be able to research once the revision is known.

if they say 250, double it. which would mean you'd want a 500watt psu.

I am planning a total PC upgrade inside 6 months, but might as well get a PSU now. They dont get outdated as fast as graphicscards.

Looking at an ANtec Neopower 650W. Hopefully that will be enough for my next killer system.

well not necesarilly.

if they say 400 that doesnt mean you should get an 800watt because thats a waste.

when it comes to video cards the wattage rating isnt usually as important as the 12V rail ratings. for just about any card a 600watt with dual 12V rails running lets say 22AMPS per rail would do fine, might be cutting it close for an 8800ULTRA/GTX, but you get the point.

a 7600GS would do fine with a 350W Enermax.

A 500 watt PSU for that system is overkill to a ridiculous degree.

I am sorry to tell you this, but the problem is definitely not an underpowered PSU. The PSU might be defective, but as you have not had problems before, I doubt your new PSU will help.

As far as I can tell your problem is either some kind of driver error, or, more likely, a defective video card.

^^ Agreed. Get nVidia's latest driver on there, remove everything else.

Turn off automatic reboots (google...)

Check if you have files in c:\windows\minidumps. If so read my .sig for help in debugging the dump.

well, that was just being assinine with that comment.

yet I guess you've never had someone have dual PSU's in their system and both had to be 550watt at least. I've seen gaming machines need alot of power depending on all the hardware in the case, and usage. I took those into account with his setup and possible future needs. i always look ahead when I help someone, to give them a machine that will be able to do more down the road as needed. I guess some people don't.

I can not believe how many kids nowadays always assume it's software that's the issue.

I see none of you bothered to check the mobo specs or video card specs. I found at least 2 possible culprits for the issue, but will know when the OP gets back to me. I always check hardware first, I may be old school, but it's always the best things to check with 1st before going off all halfcocked.

For A7N8X make sure to use the Asus Nforce chipset drivers. Sometimes it is the exact way you hook the power up to the card. I had a ATI All-in-wonder 9800 and it was finicky with a 400 watt Antec power supply. Sometimes just rearranging the power cables makes a difference.
