Don't know about that. I'm thinking the Q6600 still seems like the sweet spot if you are overclocking. I would think you could get about the same top speed out of either one and with the price drop I'm betting we will start seeing them under $200 on NewEgg pretty soon.

And considering that the Q6700 has already been for sale at Clubit.com several times over the past few weeks for $299.99 with free shipping....It might drop even further (or Clubit has already jumped the gun).

well, the question is twofold:

1. Will the extra 1x multi help you get a higher oc?

2. Are the Q6700's fundamentally "better" than Q6600, ie: will they run at faster speeds at lower voltages, thus also helping get the better oc?

If you can answer yes to either of those then the Q6700 is probably the way to go. Based upon what I've seen/heard, the extra 1x multi won't get you a better oc unless you have very slow ram and the chips are identical otherwise.

The higher multi isn't going to help you. Just about every board compatible with quads will overclock to 400mhz.

It's nice that the official prices have gone down, but with all the sales on 65nm parts, nothing really changes.

The Q6600 would have to drop to around $150 for me to consider building a new system around it. My current system is plenty fast (for me). I will move to a quad-core at some point though.

yeah, the Q6700 doesn't offer much more, the Q6600 already has a relatively 'ideal' multiplier of 9

the quads that really need the higher multi are the new yorkies - I'd LOVE to have a 9x multi on my Q9450, instead I have to deal with an 8...

A bit off topic: WTurner what is your voltage and cooling solution on that BE?

1.45. Cooler is Zalman CNPS 9700NT. I used Tom's Hardware as a guide.

thats good news for me, i would love to have a q6700, but i wonder if nehalem will be a big enough jump to make all these quads seem slow.

Who wants to go buy a new processor on 420?

I'm gonna be busy being completely not busy.

Any thoughts on how quickly these MSRP changes will impact online vendor prices like at ZZF or NewEgg once April 20 hits?
