I've been running for over 10 years (I started in my 30's). I've slowly made improvements and was glad that I started doing a weekly 5k (every Wednesday evening) last Spring / Summer. I've been training hard for the last 8 or 9 months and I've been watching how much I eat for the last 6 months or so (I've lost around 20lbs). I also signed up for my first 2 Half Marathon races this year (May 4th and May 17th). With all of this effort, I'm glad to say that I just managed to start breaking into the sub 7 minute mile!

I know a recent update of my phone app (Sports-Tracker) seemed to trim off some distance of what has been my 'normal route' for years. Once that happened, my pace showed higher (similar time + shorter reported distance = slower pace). But, I kept working at it and to see that I was clipping very low 7's and even a few blips into the 6:50's per mile surprised me. Yesterday, I did a local 5k and while I missed the registration (so no bib, no medal or ribbon, and worst of all no 'Official Time'), I ran alongside everyone and knew that the course distance would be accurate. Sure enough, my phone showed 3.12Miles and 21:25 Min/Sec! That gives me an average pace of 6:51 per mile. My first mile was 6:44, second mile was the slowest @ 7:04, my third mile was 6:47, and the last bit (.12) was 0:46!

I'm so happy that at 47 years old, I've beaten my old 7:05 M/M from like 10 years ago. I tied that 7:05 last year, but couldn't seem to get any faster than that. I'm pretty content, but I just need to average another sub 7MM for a registered race and then I'll be totally satisfied. For what it is worth, I've never had any training. Sure, I've tried what other runners suggested and some stuff I'd read. But, I've never had anyone coach me. I think I'd be doing even better if I had a coach. But for now, I'll just keep going solo. I also want to see what difference a lighter pair of shoes will make.

I don't know how people run that fast. I can barely break an 8mm. Takes me 5hr to run a marathon. Congrats.

That's awesome. Congrats
Folks like you are making this a tough bracket to race in. lol

So far my PR is 22:00.7 7:06/M set last year on a flat course.
I'd like to break that 7m mark but I'd have to sacrifice some bulk at this point if I want compete in this 40-50 bracket.

Awesome job, man! Back a few years ago I did a 20:35 3/mi (6:52/mi). Then I gave up and didn't run for a long time. Still half-heartedly trying to get back to that. I'm at about 7:30-45 right now for that distance and can pull off 8:30 for long runs.

Impressive! I would be proud! I just started running about 9 months ago, in December I hit my PR for 5k of 24:50... I pretty much plateau'd for various reasons, then in March my back got all messed up, easing back into it 1-3x a week, but usually hover around 9 min miles...

Keep up the good work!

edit: i'm 29 btw

Thanks guys. It's hard to explain to other people (non-runners) what goals you reach. My sister couldn't understand why my niece, nephew, and I would be talking about our running together. I told her that for most of us, running is a personal experience and rarely do we get to share what is happening with other people (let alone people who would understand).

Yesterday I bought another pair of running shoes. These are a bit lighter than my regular running shoes and I'm hoping that they will make a little improvement in my times. I'll have to keep track of that. Yesterday I did a 2 mile 'break-in' run with those shoes and I did a 7:16 and a 7:04. Today I'm going to do a long run (the last long run before a half marathon I'd like to do on fathers day). I'll see how they feel and switch off back to my regular shoes if I feel anything wrong along the way.

Thanks again for the support and I'm glad to read / learn of other peoples experiences. Thanks to all that have shared.
