New 52" LCD cant go 1920x1200 via VGA Input?

My roommate just bought a Sharp LC52SB55U 52" 1080p Flat Panel LCD HDTV.
I got the genius idea to hook up my computer to this new found monster. I've got a spare cable from an old 17" Samsung LCD. It connects to the back of my 8800GTS with a VGA-DVI converter, and ends with a male VGA port. There is a VGA input on the back of the TV, pretty self explanatory. The TV goes into 720p 1378x760 (or something). In the display properties, my computer sees the TV as a "generic monitor" and can only go up to 1600x1200. No option for 19x12. Do I need a DVI -> HDMI to get full 1920x1200? Or is it possible to get 19x12 via a VGA cable?

You'll never get 1920x1200 since your TV is 1920x1080 native. (your vid card has to be set to 1920x1080 @60Hz)

Depending on the TV, it might not support that res. through VGA, so a DVI to HDMI cable would probably work better.

It sounds from his post like this is a 720P television, not even a 1080P model.

If the model number in the OP is correct, then it's a 1080P TV. Like others have all ready said, it's very common for TVs to limit the resolution on the VGA port, so that's probably the case here. The info should be in the manual.

Thank you guys. I'll be getting a DVI -> HDMI cable from Newegg. And yeah, 1920x1080 is the resolution I'm looking for. 😉 I'm an HD Noob. 😛

Did your video card come with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter? If it did, then you can just use that with an HDMI cable.
