New 5.1 setup...

So my brother just bought himself some 5.1 Surround Logitech Speakers for his PC. He's gotten it all set up for surround sound and he says it sounds great for movies streamed from Netflix and Hulu. When he plays music using a media player (Songbird, in his case), he gets crackling and distortion along with the sound from two of the back speakers.

I assume that the way he's adjusted the sound for video does not transfer well to music, similar to the way a "Rock" setting in a car stereo may not sound great for Classical music.

My question is, 1) does that make sense and am I right in thinking that? and 2) Is there any way he can fix this, maybe some software for setting up separate profiles for audio and video?

Thanks for any help!

What set is it?

Maybe the distortion is a side effect of the pseudo surround processing it's doing from stereo music sources?

If it's the z-5300 set and he has "matrix mode" enabled for example, try turning that off so that stereo music is just played back in 2.1
