putting together a new rig:

So far i have the following components:

p4 3Ghz 800fsb DSL6WK pack date 18/6/03
ati 9800 pro 128mb
1GB pc4000 kingston hyperx memory 2x512mb twinned khx4000k2/1G
dell 1901 fp monitors x 2
2 x wd 120GB 8MB cache hd
2 x wd Raptor WD360GD , 36.7 GB hd
CM210 blue

What im missing -

what cpu cooler?
What mobo?
what cdrw?
what dvd writer?

Questions -

1- im missing a mobo, any reccomendations, i want max overclocking!!!

2- Whats the max overclock i could expect from this cpu?

3- I intend to run the ata hds in raid 0 and raptors in sata raid 0, is this the max performance setup?

4- Any general thoughts or if you think i could have done better with other components pls have your say.

Thanks!

I dont think you'll get much of an OC on the 3Ghz part (its almost at the highest speed for that part, plus it has a high multiplier), then again you are guarenteed 3.0Ghz out the door.

stock intel coolers are fine get another if you *need* it or if you are ocing the hell out of your chip.

mobo: I would get the asus 865 part or the abit IC7
cd/dvdrw: I'd get a CDRW and wait on the DVD-R standards to iron out, unless of course you really need a DVD-R but most dont: CDRW: Light-On 52x24x52

I dont know much about the speed of the raid setup you propose there.

Look into Mushkin RAM thats the best ram out there, Corsair and others really cannot compare to Mushkin ... but you might hear otherwise.

I would also go for the IC-7

A Thermalright SLK-800/900 will be great for cooling a nice overclock...

I would personally save a bit of cash and get a 2.8c chances are you will get the same speed in the end... 3.3-3.5ghz

However i did recently see someone here with a 3.0 @ 3.6

:D

Whatever floats your boat.

1. IS7/IC7 or P4P800/P4C800
2. you should be able to get to 3.3-3.4 but as always YMMV
3. raid0 is good
4. general thoughts: pc4000 is a waste of money

i believe it is the p4c800 or p4p800 that can do above 280 mhz fsb 1:1

with the ic7 you are limited at 255 mhz fsb 1:1

yeah...

but hopefully the ic7 max 3 fixed that but no one knows yet...

if you got more money to spend, get a koolance exos for cooling. water cooling will help you max your OC.

Well, my choice of motherboard would be the IS7. It seems to be beating the 875 chipsets with the latest BIOS and cost much less :).

For cooling the beast, I take off the IHS's on all my P4's. It always yeilds a better OC and much lower temps. Regardless if you take it off or not, I use a MCX4000 with a Vantec stealth. Nice and quiet with plenty of cooling power :)

I can not really help out on a DVD burner as I only one I own is teh suk. (the NEC for Dell that I scooped up thanks to the HD forums)

I am not sure of the OC you will get, but don't get PC4000... your CPU will never be able to get to a bus high enough for that. But I would want CAS2 though, so my choice would be Mushkin Black Level II in the PC3700 flavor. But that is OOP also

.

Get a full tower case or big mid tower for best cooling and expandability. Those little mid tower's or smaller bite the big one.

Hope this all helps :)

Asus P4C800-E Deluxe quite a tasty mobo.

Agreed DDR4000 overkill since the 3.0 probably wont O/C like a madman Mushkin makes kick ass memory

Raid 0 with those Raptors is the shizit

This is the high dollar setup since your going with a exspensive CPU.

if you're limited at 255 1:1 then no matter how much cooling you add, you wont get a higher o/c...

it is a bios issue that is supposedly being worked on...

but anyway...

most i got outa my 3.0C was 3510mhz. Not bad, but no chance to run at DDR500. So i returned it for a 2.6C.
