New 360 Price Cut Rumor - August

According to internet reports, a major Canadian retailer has confirmed that the Xbox 360 is set to receice an Official $100 price drop across all Skus as of August 1st. That will mean that the Xbox 360 core will retail for $199 (with a pack in memory unit) and be even cheaper than the Wii at $249 USD.

A look at what the market would like like with the proposed price cut

- Xbox 360 core, $199 USD (with included memory unit)
- Nintendo Wii, $249 USD
- Xbox 360 Premium, $299 USD
- Xbox 360 Elite, $399 USD
- PS3, $599 USD

Well even though a price cut wasn't announced at E3...it was imminent. That sounds like a better price cut than the $50 MS wanted to take off of each SKU. Wonder what the H3 edition will run, since it's just a 20GB but with HDMI.

It will certainly help MS shore up their ranks in North America; maybe even stopping the Wii from taking the sales lead here until 2008 (I predicted end of this year if no price drops occurred). It won't stop the bleeding in Japan, however.

It definitely would be the mark of death for the PS3 (especially now that the $499 SKU is set to expire, yet again).

MUCH better rumor than the stupid analyst talk early this week. Couple that huge price drop with Microsoft playing nice, admitting to problems, and extending warranties left and right, they will be a force to be reckoned with. A $200 unit with a memory card would give the Wii a run for it's money, especially with Halo 3 coming. Hell, even with GTA4.....the price of admission for those sitting on the fence would only be $259+tax. Any game you pick would be better than a Wii with Wii Sports (not even a full-fledged game) for around the same price.

My predictions:
1. Across the line Falcon refresh with HDMI.
2. Core will now have 512mb memory card.
3. Core at $225, Premium at $325, Elite at $400. Those prices may be +/- $25, depending on how heavily Microsoft wants to cut.

That would let the Core fight it out with the Wii effectively while giving the Elite breathing room against the inevitable PS3 price cut.

As for the original link, I think it's BS. The source is Canadian, yet everything is delineated in US dollars? I think not.

Eh, we'll see. They don't have much incentive to drop the price now that Sony's price drop has fizzled.

Comparing the Core to the Wii removes one of the 360's biggest advantages over the Wii - downloadable content. Yeah, you could fit some stuff on 512 MB... but not the good stuff. You're basically limited to a small number of XBLA games and some video clips.

I'm taking this one with a huge grain of salt...I'll believe it when I see it. If they did go to these prices...it sure would whoop some ass this fall...especially with all of the great games coming out. If the Wii stays at $250 and the Core is $200...that's going to be a tough call...even for a Wii fanatic.

But that's the hook! They buy the cheap core, and as they get into the 360 scene, they start hunting Ebay, CL, ect. for used 20gb HDDs, wireless controllers, all the stuff they should have ponied up for initially. Some will even buy retail, and really feel the pain.

Even if that were true, I still don't feel too bad for buying an elite now. I will pay 80 dollars to play the 360 a few months earlier, rather then await a price drop. I wish I bought a 360 earlier, but I only had the means to recently.

I feel the same as long as there are games out there that I want to play. The 360 has more than enough good games out there (from my perspective) to pick it up now regardless of the fact that the price may be less in a month or so.

Hm, I'd consider getting one if this were true.

They have the PS3 listed as $600 still, which technically it's not currently (though with a recent stupid announcement, it might be back up to it within a month or two)...that doesn't scream "credible" to me.

I know it's going to happen, so it wouldn't surprise me. That core model could be a big blow to the Wii, and especially PS3.

Really, though, I'm not getting one until the red-ring-of-death is ironed out.

Me too. Already have a Wii, been thinking about getting a 360. Or a Bike... tough choice.

Yep, me too. It has to both or nothing though.

And I want the wireless link to drop to less than $50 too 😛

As far as this going against the wii, I don't think it will matter much because the demographics are so much different.

That, and the wii is an already rolling juggernaut. They have to be close to 360 numbers shipped already. It sounds like they (nintendo) are predicting to the wii to completely have passed by the number of gamecubes every sold by next March, which is pretty awesome if you think about it.

If you want a $50 wireless adapter for the 360, just get any $50 wireless router that can function as a wireless bridge. Not only will you be able to use it for your 360, but also 3+ other devices.

Doh. Hadn't even thought of that. Any recommendations? That would be especially nice, as I could hook both the 360 and my Media PC to the same adapter...

Thanks!

D-Link should be coming out with this shortly. Great for a Media Center PCs as it will give you draft 802.11n throughput, and you can also connect at least 4 other devices to it (Obviously you'll need a draft 802.11n router to take advantage of the n throughput). They demoed it at CES 2007 with a D-Link DIR-655 and it worked great! It created a nice draft 802.11n wireless bridge.

Linksys WRT54G with third party firmware will do it.

A 199 premium 360 would almost be enough to make me buy it. Assuming they straighten out the issues they've been having and Halo 3 and GTA4 are good.

I'll second that recomendation. The nice thing about this guy is that it has a 4 port switch built right into it so I can hook up my PS3 20GB, my 360, and my HD DVD player without needing an addition switch.
