yeah well....

the price difference between a p4c and a p4p (non deluxe) is around 70 bucks!

i can't justify 70 bucks to get a canterwood that performs slightly better (well maybe not slightly) than a springdale.

lots of people use the springdale as well so...

i'm just going to settle for the springdale

Still cheaper than they were back in April, when they first came out.
Paid $205 for the P4C800-Dlx that I am still running on my main rig today.

yeah.... and the mods for this board don't look too difficult to do.

i probably won't need a vdimm mod considering that i'll be using 5:4 and not 1:1 so i won't need extreme vdimms and if I do, then I can just do the vdimm mod later.

the only mod i think i may end up having to do is the vcore droop mod as to prevent a huge drop in the voltage under load or major fluctuation in the voltage.

I want one of these 3.0GHZ P4C chips that overclock like crazy....are all the newer P43.0C chips like this? If so I might be turning in my Athlon XP setup and going P4 again.

How can you tell if it's a "b" chip ?

newegg list them as 3.0C oem or retail

you can't tell ... you just have to take a gamble! that's what i did...

it seems that a lot of the people that got in on the intel board with xp pro and a 3.0c for 300 bucks are all gettin' these "b" chips...

Damn those Asus mobos are overvolting suckers as well as tremendous liars in temps...Not likely in your case as your temps are probably down right cold...

I know. My old A7N8X-X overvolted my Barton by .03v. And how much of a difference is there on temps?

i gave up on trying to figure my temps...

asus probe won't work properly...

i'll have to try mbm i guess

on water, i got it to 3.66 stable on the ic7 with 1.6 volts

right now it's at 4.0 ghz with 1.625 volts on an asus p4p800

Asus IMO and others reports 8-10c lower then actual and abits report 8-10 higher then actual...Asus mobos with same setup may show 15-20c difference in loading and that is plain bunk!!!!


You know how many times I have seen guys running overclocked 2.4's and 2.6's at 3.2-3.3 range with default to 1.6v and have 29c idle temps and 40c load temps in prime95?? Too many to know it is plain crap....I have as good a hsf and probably better case cooling then most and at 3.3ghz my cpu is about 2c lower max then my 3.5ghz...Even at 2.4 my abit will report loading to 55c....

With load swings that don't seem to match HSF rated c/w and load temps that at idle woud be great for about 80% of other mobos...

Maybe 1 or 2 ppl I chalk it up to probably not a true loading temp but as many I see it is plain and simple Asus reports much different then about 80-90% of the p4 mobo industry...Kinda like my nutty Albatron i845pe chipset that would reports 39-40c load with my 2.4@3.24ghz...


IMO and some may disagree but asus has been doing this for years...overvolting, overclocking at default (meaning actual clock speed is slightly higher then stock) and temps low in the favor of the cpu user....I don't find it a coincidence....I remember a review awhile back here at anandtech where someone speculated they do it to gain the upper edge in head to head chipset comparsions versus other makers....They would be higher then almost all other manufacturers and in return finish 1 to 2 in most all the competitions....

The one thing I do like is the overvolting to a point...In cases where the vcore is only .03 to .05v it seems to work perfect as the vcore set in the bios becomes the actual loading vcore...But in shimishim case that is a bunch of crap....Hell at default that would be to the limit I don't like to go...Never have to set the vcore!!! Just run until it doesn't work...

i've been having issues, so i thought, with 3dmark2k1

2.4C @ 3.5 (12 x 292) 5:4 (234 mhz) @ 2.5-4-3-7 on an ic7 = 20.2K
3.0C @ 4.0 (15 x 267) 5:4 (213 mhz) @ 2-3-3-6 on an p4p800 = 20.8K

so...

it's interesting to find that a program or "mock test" as Duvie would call it is very dependent on pure fsb and not on clock speed...

but programs such as superpi show a different story

2.4C @ 3.5 (12 x 292) 5:4 (234 mhz) @ 2.5-4-3-7 on an ic7 = 41/42 sec
3.0C @ 4.0 (15 x 267) 5:4 (213 mhz) @ 2.0-3-3-6 on a p4p800 = 37 sec

interesting stuff...

i'm very tempted to take that 2.4C i have laying around, stick it in the prommy, get that thing up to 4.0 ghz (if possible) and see what sort of score I'd get on 3dmock2k1

i did notice though that going from 3.5 to 4.0 with the 3.0C showed an increase 2.6K on 3dmark2k1


can anyone or people give me a list of programs dependent more on fsb and also programs that are more dependent on pure clockspeed?
