New 2405FPW LCD user, DVI doesn't work, please help!

Took the plunge and got me a new shiney 24-incher, excellent impressions so far however I was not able to get the monitor to display from the DVI output, D-SUB (analogue) works fine.

The video card is Nvidia 6800GT, both the DVI and the D-SUB cables are connected to the appropriate inputs on the monitor. When selecting the DVI-D input by pressing the source selection button on the LCD I get a blank screen and if I tap the Menue key on the LCD it says something to the effect "Power Saving Mode. Please hit a key or move your mouse", when I try these there's no change. I've also tried to disconnect the D-SUB cable and run with just the DVI cable, that didn't help either.

The proper Dell drivers are installed (got them from the Dell website), but I suspect I am not doing something right. When I check the display properties under NVidia settings it identifies two monitors: 1 - 2405FPW Analogue and 2 - 2405FPW Digital. Does this mean I have to somehow swap the primary and the secondary displays in the settings? Do I have to set up dual displays to be able to select DVI? Or is the videocard supposed to output simultaneously to both the DVI and the D-SUB? Sorry if this is a lame question, I am new to the LCD/DVI world having used CRT's in the past.

Any help would be appreciated.

System info:

P4 2.4@2.8, 1GB RAM, NVidia 6800GT (latest OEM drivers), display settings (on analogue output): 1920x1200 @60Hz, PIP mode is off, the display "1" is seen by the video card as 2405FPW Analogue.

Can someone who's successfuly using a 6800 series card with the 2405FPW on a DVI-D connection confirm what is their LCD monitor identified as in the NVidia settings? (i.e. whether the "2405 FPW Digital" is the primary or the secondary one?)

I have a strong suspicion that I need to change the priority of the monitors so the "2405 FPW Analogue" shows up as display 2 rather than display 1 and vice versa for the Digital one.

Also, what would be a good program to do that? (NVTweak is all that comes to my mind...)

do this first - in the display settings, set it to single display and select the "digital" selection. turn off monitor. disconnect the vga cable. turn on monitor. press the mode switch button on the monitor (should be the far left one) until the "1" is lit.

anything?

Thanks for the reply HN, I'll try it tonight when I am at home.

A Google search revealed that flatpanels getting stuck in Power Save mode on DVI are a well known and a very common issue.

For anybody whith a similar problem (happens on other Dell LCD's too, not just the 2405), here's a discussion thread (10 pages, lol ) : http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums...?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=33721 No sure-fire fix even though this has been an issue for over a year. Gotta love Dell...

Disconnect the VGA cable from your video card. If you have both of them plugged in with the computer on it will most likely default to the VGA output. I know I've read somewhere in Dell's documentation to not plug both the DVI and VGA into the same computer.

I've used 6 different Dell LCDs over the past year, and I've never had a problem with one getting stuck in power saver mode. I've used several GeForce 6 based video cards (AGP 6800GT, PCI-e 6800GTs, 6600GT) and never had this problem.

I know that they found the DVI transmitters on nVidia cards to be not that terribly great, so its possible its more a problem with the card and not the monitor.

I had this exact same problem with my 2405 on a 6600GT when I first got it. Spent a long time trying different ways of fixing it. Finally found that there was a small burr in one end of the DVI cable, and that end was not seating right in the connector, even though it appeared to be seated properly. I knocked out the burr, reseated the cable, and everything worked fine.

Also, make sure you have the DVI display enabled. Go into the Display Properties and click the Settings tab, if DVI display looks lighter and translucent, it isn't enabled. Right click on it and make sure it is Attached and set as the Primary. Once you set it to primary, your display may go blank and you'll have to hit the minus button on the monitor to switch between vga and dvi.

I have the power save problem with DVI on my Dell 2001FP as well. Occasionally I have to cyle the inputs to get it to come back on. It is pretty common for Dell DVIs.

EDIT: Thanks a lot for your suggestion, now I am able to see the desktop with DVI output! At first didn't have the systray or the desktop icons on the digital one but deselecting "Attached" from the Analogue desktop fixed that.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys, now I can enjoy my new toy 🙂

UPDATE: After just one day the problem returned, I had to do a hard restart (since I had no display) and that brought the display back. I've simply turned off screensaver and power management altogether to avoid the problem from happening again. Now I just turn the LCD off when I am not at the computer. I wonder if there ever will be a permanent fix for this.
