Yeah, but you could get a 2008 Focus for less than $12K when it was new, so...

I doubt it. A completely stripped down civic would of likely ran around 16k so it still works out in Honda's favor. And on top of that someone driving a 6 year old focus looks ridiculous while the 08 civic still looks good and isn't a complete heap of trash.

Well yeah, the 08 Focus was/is total garbage.

I personally don't care about resale value, so I'll take the upfront savings on less popular brands.

It's not just about resale. Look at the guy on the forums that thought he got a great deal on a focus and the thing drinks coolant like a fish. All the while the dealership says we can't find a problem and tops off his coolant.
 
Doesn't look too bad. I'm actually looking to get rid of my 2013 Focus ST myself though. It's not a bad car but I think the VW/Audi fanboy in me has buyer's remorse for some reason.

I'm looking at a Q5 or possibly a MK7 Golf R.
