New 100GB HDD from Dell

Dell is now offering a new 100GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA/100 HDD with an absolutely humongous 8MB buffer cache with their Dimension 8100 systems. Does anyone know what company (IBM, Maxtor, Western Digital, etc.) manufactures this monster?

<< IBM most likely. >>

I once was browsing Dell and saw their specs on that drive. Very slow access times (10.9 milliseconds). That is 22% slower than typical IDE access times. I thought it was a maxtor but I could be wrong.

Only fits about 12,5 DVD movies uncompressed. You can never have enough space when it comes to the ultimate multimedia experience.

If its 7200RPM is WD
if its 5400 RPM its Maxtor

AFAIK, those are the only choices.

true, is it worth storing dvd and other files on your hd, that would slow down your pc, i have a 30 gb and i only use 2 gb at max and some i use more storing mp3, then i delete them.

But if you are fortunate like me and have 2 HDDs, one of which is used for large "multimedia" files, you don't have to worry about slowing your system down (assuming that by "pc" you mean your OS). :)

I have 2 hdds, and would soon add more if my case and power supply could handle it ;)

that is because the weight of a mp3 is really high... if it was on the periodic table it would be near lead...
what happens when you stick them on your hard drive it weighs the platters down and they cant spin as fast...
i recommend sending me the 30 HDD and i will replace it with a 4 gig that is double the capasity you use so you will be good

It's a WD drive with 8MB buffer. Read the fine print on the benchmarks:

"1. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Dimension 8100 @ 1.7 GHz w/128MB PC800 RDRAM, Windows Me, NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra (6.34 driver), DX8.0a, WD1000 (100GB) 7200 RPM Hard Drive w/2MB & 8MB of cache, and Sound Blaster PCI audio.

But the Western Digital web site says nothing about a version of the WD1000BB with a 8MB buffer cache. It looks like it was something specially made for Dell.

Slick! Looks like a plain vanilla 1000BB and they configured Windows with a static VCACHE value of 8192KB. Bastards! :|

Cheers!
