new 1 TB Hitachi Deskstar not recognized

have a new Gigabyte EP45-ud3r system: 3 other drives in it work fine ( all SATA), decided to just use a 36 gig Raptor for boot, and partition the new large drive. Bios will not see the new drive, updated to newest bios, same thing. Spins up, but no go. Tried 2 different cables, different connectors on board, same old, same old. Sound like a fubarred new drive?
