i notice a lot of rpg threads here and im a casual fan of them.
i recently started playing EarthBound again because i miss good rpgs so much.

(yes, ive played fallout. please dont suggest it to me)

but basically, i like rpgs that are not too technical. i dont care about d20 and +2 dex while wearing this braclet provided i have a matching hat otherwise -2 charisma. i like the less subtle armor A gives me def 20, armor B def 25 (and i can handle the elemental stuff).
like a final fantasy. basically the world is going to end...stop it but take your time and explore a lot of sidequests.

im not interested in MMO ones because they tend to not go anywhere. as cliche as the plots are in standard rpgs, i like them. character development, etc. online games i just like to shoot things. i used to play city of heroes but all of it gets old.
so!
neverwinter nights seems to be the Big Hit i havnt played yet. anything else come out in the last few years i should have played? is nwn a good game?
(played both KOTOR games as well)

it's good but by default it operates under D&D ("technical") ruleset so I dunno if you'd like it. IIRC, unlike Baldur's Gate, where you control a party, NWN only lets you control one character. So you'll be going through the entire game alone unless you make a party on the internet. (I think that's how it was... it's been years since I last played it)

sounds like you like console rpgs... get some ps2 or gameboy rpgs

In addition to your own character, you can also have a hireling. While you don't directly control their actions, you can change your party setup so they engage in combat or hold back, etc.

It does abide by the D&D ruleset pretty closely.

I like Dungeon Siege more than NWN, and Dungeon Siege 2 is slated to come out in August - eagerly awaiting that one. :D

Since you liked KOTOR you have a good chance of liking NWN. Yes your hat can affect your charisma, but that was true of all the equipment in KOTOR as well (it used D&D rules too).

You have a bit less control over your henchman (and only 1 not 2) but enough to get by.

If you make your character a fighter or monk (martial arts / unarmed) you can pretty much ignore spellcasting, which is a big part of the complexity.

I hated NWN because the pathfinding absoluately sucked. It completely blew the immersion when guys couldn't even get by simple barrels. Then again I get anal about those things as a programmer...

Yes, that was annoying -- I had to revert to an earlier save once when I couldn't lead my henchman around a corner so they were stuck in a room forever  :|

I'm used to it though, in Fallout 1 you couldn't bump people out of the way, and at one point Ian decided to block a bridge over radioactive waste, trapping me on the other side. Hey Ian, want to see my new Plasma Rifle? =zappp=

Seems that Ian made a habit of doing that as it happened to me too (outside the Gun Runner's place, close to the Boneyard, right?).

To the OP, I'd say Newerwinter Nights is worth checking out. Even though it seems many agree that the original single player campaign was pretty weak, I finished and enjoyed it (even though I only played it through once).

I'm actually considering getting the two expansion packs at the moment. If you feel you may be interested in those at well, you should propably get the Platinum Edition which includes the original game as well as both expansions.

Yep, and I think Computer Gaming World used it as an example too, curse you Ian!

The two NWN expansions are fun though nothing extra special. The first one starts you back at level 1, which I used as an excuse to try a FIghter(3 levels)/Mage(6)/Arcane Archer character.

The second expansion lets you use your level 12-15 character from either NWN or the first expansion, but plays the old trick of having all of your equipment stolen in the first few seconds of the game. You have a chance to get good replacements fairly quickly though.

Bioware never intended the original SP campaign to be the game's sole campaign either. :p Neverwinter Vault has I don't know how many thousands of custom modules. Everything from hack and slash to mods that are so story intensive they can make hard core players bored.

Give it a shot, just try and get the DVD version of the Platinum edition.

NWN is a decent game but i always lost interest in it fairly quickly, thats from someone that has put like a thousand hours into final fantasy games so i don't lose interest quickly. if you haven't already also look at Morrowind for a cool but ageing rpg. i put dungeon siege about the same as NWN nice systems but the lack of interesting story kinda kills it. think i liked Sacred more than either of those.

I played NWN co-op and finished the game with my buddy. This is one of the best PC RPG, and the graphics are nice. I strongly recommend playing co-op if you can find a buddy and the time to play together.

i've played NWN OC and Hordes of the Underdark (expansion #2). the original campaign i found to be very slow and boring (but i did finish). HOTU was absolutely awesome because it was fast-paced and you leveled fairly often. between single and multiplayer (nwn has a strong MP community), you wouldn't be disappointed in buying NWN platinum (dvd that has all NWN expansions + original game). i play on a persistent world server and its lots of fun partying up and kicking ass with other people.

and by the way, be a monk. the only class i've ever been able to solo the Hordes expansion w/ He was a total badass!

I did the same and agree. A friend and I played through the whole original campaign coop and it was a blast. Good times.
