What's the story on Grade "B" Laptops from Geeks.com?

I've been looking for a laptop for a friend from church. ($250-300 budget)

I've been looking at used laptops for him but I noticed the refurbished (Grade "B") ones on Geeks.com.

I know the ad lists the following:
Refurbished Notebook Grades:
Grade B Notebook is in very good condition
Has Cosmetic Blemishes, examples of which are (but not limited to):
Scratches in case
Scratches in the screen
Hairline crack in case
Dead pixels (5 or less)
Missing doors
May be missing manual, drivers, operating system, carrying cases
Battery is not guaranteed to hold a full charge Battery is not covered under warranty
All specific issues will be noted in the ad

What is your experience with Grade "B" Laptops, particularly from geeks?

Thanks,
Jeff

i'd say you'd probably get what you pay for. if your friend there is going to be happy with a possibly beat up laptop with a crappy screen and a battery that cant hold a charge, then there shouldnt be any disappointment.

So, in other words you have no information about the question, you just wanna plaster your opinion in my thread?

Not many will have experiences IMO. Most will either go through ebay or dell outlet. Dell might be a better place to look because they offer a warranty. Do you know what they plan to use the laptop for? I ask this because if they are only going to be surfing the web and email a mini 12 might suit them and they can be had for under 300. I think there is a sale for an inspiron (15"?) on the front page but its a bit more than what they want to pay, $399 IIRC. Good luck.

what the do you expect for b grade. its b grade for a reason. use common sense

I'd go with a coupon + dell outlet instead of a "grade b" laptop. Or even getting a used one off craigslist may be less risk since you can inspect the laptop in person

He's just stating the obvious. You could get this thing and it have a cracked and scratched case, dead pixels and scratched screen, and a dead battery. Are those risks worth saving a few bucks? Dell outlet is by far the best place to get refurbed notebooks.

Try Dell Financial Services, a friend bought 2 - Latitude D610s for a charity and they were in very nice shape with a 100 day warranty.

But really, a Sunday paper ad or Hot Deal laptop at $399 with a full year warranty, more RAM, bigger HD is probably the best idea.
