Well, if you're planning on taking your PS3 online, you'll have to download the firmware update.

That said, it looks to only be old 60GB and 80GB models for whatever reason. I have a 'Slim' and haven't experienced any freezing at all.

Or maybe not.

We are sorry to hear the game is freezing! We have received a few tickets about some isolated crashes / freezes and we are investigating them individually to find out the causes and the resolution.

Here is what to do if you are crashing or freezing in L.A. Noire:

1. Delete your L.A. Noire Game Data (not save data) from the PS3 Game Data Utility. If on 360, clear the 360 cache.

2. Create a new temporary PS3 user to ensure that new save files are created. If on 360, create an offline Silver Gamertag.

3. Launch the game and try again. If you are on PS3, try playing while signed out of PSN.

4. Check your disc for scratches, dust, dirt, or other damage. Clean if necessary.

5. Check other game discs in your PS3/360 to see if issues are occurring in other games, suggesting a potential console problem.

6. Try your L.A. Noire disc in a different console or try a different L.A. Noire disc in your console to determine with certainty whether the issue could be with the disc or console, rather than the software.

And then they released this.

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3’s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below

If it's only the older PS3s it just might be a bunch that have finally worn through their factory thermal paste. Might be time to dismantle and reapply.

eh you only hear about this because people want an excuse why their ps3 kicks the bucket. pretty sure if this update never happened their ps3 would have kicked the bucket anwyays.

you never hear about the ps3's overheating between fw updates because they can't use anything as an excuse.

<popular game> killed my <console> is a common complaint for blockbuster games.

It might be true, or it might be that <popular game> is the first one in a long time that had them playing for several hours in a row.

I have a launch PS3 (60GB) and have been playing LA Noire for hours and hours and havent experienced a single freeze. In fact I accidentally left it on overnight yesterday, paused in the middle of gameplay, and it was fine the next morning.

Makes me wonder if the affected machines are actually poorly ventilated (dust-clogged vents) and not getting enough cool air.

I'm almost positive it's just older machines with extremely poor ventilation. Anybody who takes apart their computer every couple of months knows how badly dust can build up inside a PC case, so a PS3 shouldn't be any different. I would assume PS3 components are also a little more fragile than PC components. So it's probably just the fact that these PS3s haven't been exposed to a 3-4 hour gaming session in a long time, and this would have happened regardless of what they were playing.
