Hey guys!

I'm moving out of residence and into my own place in September (a big step; I'm only 17) and me and my roommate-to-be have decided to forego a land-line and just get cell phones.

Well, I know that he doesn't care what kind of phone he gets (he's a PoliSci student, what can I say?), but I do. I was thinking of getting a T68i, but the design is somewhat dated now. So I started looking at some other phones. Big mistake -- there are way too many choices!

So what do you guys think is the best cell phone? Only one criteria: must have Bluetooth!! (For interfacing with the T40... which I don't have... yet... )

well, if you're going for bluetooth you're really limiting yourself. i have a t68i and i think it's great.

Check out cnet or amazon.. Or if you really need our advice post more details - service provider, network (gsm, etc.), budget, features that you'd like.. etc.. "the best" is really, really vague.. For me the best would be something that's free.. but i'm poor, so nevermind..

T68i is good if you're not using AT&T. Apparently the implementation of GSM is borked in their T68i. It may have been fixed, you'd do well to check over at http://www.howardforums.com

I realize it is, but I just needed somewhere to start. This is really flexible (in terms of network and features) and as for budget, well, cheap (<$150) would be good but I would be willing to spend more if the features were right.

Yeah, Nokia tried to market a phone that was just a phone, but the FCC ruling was that it didn't have enough worthless crap to jack the price up by $300.

Listen, you've made no contribution to this thread at all. The reason I started this thread is that I thought it would be easy for other AT'ers to give me a heads-up as to what they think is a good deal, is up-and-coming, packs alot of features, etc. At least up to this point, I have been wrong. (Except for amnesiac -- thanks for the info.)

If someone were to ask me "What's the best dinghy to learn to sail in" -- an area I am knowledagable in -- I would hope that I would have the decency to not open my mouth if I didn't have anything positive to contribute. The same goes for you. So, until you have something vaild to suggest, stop talking.

[Edit: BTW I don't my useless/funny posts as long as they're not condesending like yours have been -- see M4H as an example!]

I even gave you a link to a great site FILLED with cell phone information.. I guess you wanted someone to read the site and summarize it for you..

Most carriers with contracts require that you be 18 in order to sign up for a cell phone. Otherwise you'll have to go with pre-paid or AT&T's new GO phone.

C-net ranks phones - click on the service provider, read the top 5 reviews, write down a list of the phones that you're interested in based on the reviews, come back here and say "hey, how does model xyz compare to abc? I read that it features xxxx but does is have yyyy?" Is that really that hard?

huh? sprint didn't when I signed up at age 16.

Yeah, I think you have to have a credit card - age isn't really that important (they do a credit check though - might be hard to have good credit at 17)

Age is usually a factor for the simple reason that you can't enter into a legal contact unless you are 18. If you owe them money and default it would be hard for them to come after you (if you chose the fight it) because your promise to pay (contract) wouldn't be legally binding. They'd still munch your credit rating, tho.

Pre-paid plans have finally gotten reasonably priced (considering) but you are usually limited to 1-3 lower end phone models at most services. Verizon is the best I've seen as far as phone choice - most of their phones you can use on a pre-paid plan.

That's Sprint, where they'll take anyone even with bad credit. Try going to T-Mobile, AT&T, Nextel, they'll all shut you down for being under age. Trust me, I sell phones for a living.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a T68i... they SUCK PERIOD! I had one for about 6 months. They are really slow and have terrible reception.

I just upgraded to a Nokia 7210 and I'm so much happier.
