My friend invited me to go with a bunch of friends.

I have no idea what to bring. I suppose they rent out ski equipments and goggles? How about the rest? Do I need to buy a special ski jacket and pants or what will suffice?

Anything else I need? ;)

And the most notorious question of the day: Should I ski or snowboard?

snowboard. but you will have less fun if you're only going for one day. definitely take a lesson. all you need to bring is winter weather clothing that you can be active in.

If you can ice skate, you should ski. Ice skating transitions to skiing very easily, if you're good at least.

Definitely ski, considering it's your first time.

Skiing is much easier to pick up than snowboarding. You'll just get discouraged if you try snowboarding.

Trust me.

At the very least you will need ski pants, gloves, and a hat. You should also have a nice jacket, but doesn't have to be anything fancy or expensive. You can rent ski equipment on site (boots, skis, and poles). My advice, don't rent a snowboard because you will have no fun at all. 95% of the time you will just lay on your ass in the middle of a trail somewhere and piss everybody else off. Trust me, I see that all the time. I went skiing for the first time in January and was doing blue trails on the first day, and hitting some black ones with limited success on the 2nd. It was hella fun. It's kinda late season now and the surface will probably be very icy, and while you can still have fun keep in mind it's not optimal conditions and you will probably will fall more considering it's gonna be your first time.

Snowboarding is so much easier. I've skiied 50 times and I still suck, snowboarded once and I'm not worried about crashing into people now

skiiers > snowboarders ;)

that being said...

you'll need water proof pants whether you ski or board cuz you'll be on the ground alot. get good gloves too. jacket really isn't important since it's getting pretty warm now so wear whatever. definately bring glasses and a hat, plus sunscreen

bring lots of beer/weed for after party cuz you're going to be very sore/in pain.

How good a shape are you in? Specifically, how good are your legs? Because they'll be worn out and tired by the end of the day quite likely.

I would suggest skiing. Easier to pick up, etc etc. What's been said. Snowboarding looks cooler and all, but has a hell of a learning curve.

You'll definetly want some good clothing. Reasonably heavy jacket, ski pants if you can get them, gloves, hat. Layer the stuff so you can get rid of some later if you start to overheat. Equipment you rent and it's usually of good quality depending on the place (Where are you going?)

Definetly try to get lessons if you've never even so much as skated before. Those will really pay off. Even if you do have some experience with a sport like skating they'll probably be worth it as opposed to just relying on your friends. I suggest going early for that if you have any say at all in the time.

<--- Knows from having been the friend last year for a guy from Virginia up in Quebec.

Ski if you only plan on going a few times a season or would prefer to do it over snowboarding. Snowboard if you think you?d like it and will be able to do it 5-10 times a year. Your first few won't be fun.

Skating or any sport involving a lot of leg muscles will help with skiing. Any sport like skateboarding or surfing will obviously help with snowboarding.

I'm a ski instructor, so I DO know what I'm talking about. I get to see it everyday. :)
